Topic: 2013 Awards

I think we set a record this year for the length of time to get the awards settled, this time even without a committee. Perhaps, one day, we'll actually get the awards out by end of February. There's always hope for next year.

With so many wonderful sims, sim leaders, players and GMs nominated this year, it was a tight race in every category. Were I as verbose as Ash, I'd have a list of honorable mentions, but let me just say that everyone who was nominated deserves a mention in some form or another, so I'll forgo that and get right to the results.

Congratulations to all that were nominated, and especially to the winners. Each and every one was deserving.

Player of the Year this year goes to Kevin 'Zuzutoo' Diamond. Kevin has a wide variety of characters across multiple sims. Some that I am particularly partial to are Noshin, the pilot princess from Fighter Ops, and Station Administrator Scarlett Wilson of Greenleaf Skyplex.

Sim of the Year goes to The Dark Cometh. Exploding out of the gates, this new sim held the most active monthly sim for four months in a row at the end of 2013 before being dethroned by offshoot Canis UK. The sim was so popular that it generated two additional sims in its wake - Canis UK and Canis Pacifica.

Sim Leader of the Year goes to Brandon Lowell. Having not experienced his leadership qualities directly, I can't say much except that those who played in Zodiac Mercenaries must have thought highly of the short-lived sim! I believe Brandon also served as ASL in some capacity (perhaps for Canis UK?). Unfortunately Brandon has been AWOL since December, but it is obvious from the voting that many still miss him!

GM of the Year is Giorgio 'ksabers' Borgo. His initial sim, Pacific Rim: The Shatterdome, was the only sim he GM'ed in 2013, but made a lasting impression on players and readers.

(image pending when I can find it)
Newcomer of the Year is Giorgio 'ksabers' Borgo. Giorgio jumped into Phoenix head first, getting involved with several sims, creating his own, and taking on additional responsibilities such as becoming the Graphics Officer.

Once again, congrats to all of the winners!

Re: 2013 Awards

Congratulations Giorgio, TDC, Brandon and Kevin!!!

A little reminder- Brandon was the ASL of TDC sims before he left.

Re: 2013 Awards

Congratulations to the winners!

I've decided that I'm going to let my successor as General Coordinator make the Friend of Phoenix award... had the elections not been seriously delayed, it would have gone to him/her anyway.

Re: 2013 Awards

Now that the elections are over, it is the appropriate time to give out the Friend of Phoenix award. I thought about this over the last few days, who I would give the award to if I was to become GC. First, I'd like to state what the Friend of Phoenix is to me.

I see this award similar to the awards Disney gives out to the Disney Legends, which "recognizes people who have made an extraordinary and integral contribution to the Walt Disney Company." In this case, the Friend of Phoenix (to me) is an award which recognizes people who have made an extraordinary and integral contribution to Phoenix Roleplaying.

Here is the original definition of the Friend of Phoenix award, for comparison and to see how I'm modifying it slightly: "This award is a sort of GC awarded 'Member of the Year', recognising contribution to Phoenix Roleplaying as a community, in balance to the committee awarded 'Player of the Year', which recognises excellence in roleplaying."

In essence, I'm not just looking back over the last year, but over the entire history of contributions by the membership. And in doing so, there are a LOT of people who deserve this award. Phoenix wouldn't be where it is today without the contributions of each and every one of its members.

I could go over all of the people I've thought about and considered and this would turn into a rather lengthy post. Instead, I'll leave that for whenever the next award is given out (by whoever gives it out), or as an exercise for the reader to research on their own. tongue

The person I'm giving this award to this year is Ash Leighton Plom. Let me detail out the reasons, both personal and Phoenix related.

Ash was the first person I met when I started simming, and if it wasn't for his kind and accepting nature, I may not have stuck around. It was because of both his and Deb's friendliness that I followed when they created Phoenix. Ash stepped into the role of running Phoenix while we established the rules and regulations that govern the administration (when we were under 'martial law'), and later was elected in a landslide victory (against me) to become the first General Coordinator of Phoenix. Over the last two years or so, Ash has had many personal events and other issues take him away from Phoenix, but he's always been there keeping an eye on things, willing to step in with a friendly word and catch up when able. For those new to Phoenix, you missed out on seeing a great role-player in action when he was posting regularly. I feel lucky to count him as a friend.

It was Ash's dedication and hard work that allowed Phoenix to start from humble beginnings of a dozen or so people to the club that it is today. Ash, I hope you will accept this award, because you deserve it.

Congratulations to Ash! Has he been informed?

Re: 2013 Awards

I haven't emailed him or contacted him via Facebook (or any other way). I assume when he has time he'll be back here and catch up on these threads. smile
