Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

Well, my previous post about this subject is still valid:

The single biggest issue of Phoenix, in my opinion, is the lack of new members. We had too many important losses recently and the new blood, although competent and essential, is numerically too low to compensate.
...
We need to create a friendlier and dynamic environment. Our current home is slightly dated, both in terms of container (PunBB is not the most common forum platform, nor the most state-of-the-art) and of content (some pages are not updated from years).
A restyling, maybe even a bold migration to a different platform/domain, could help us. But I am aware that it would be a big step, so it would need to be discussed, voted and planned carefully. I would concentrate my efforts in this direction.

I think that Phoenix 2.0 (both in terms of graphical restyling and of technical upgrade) is our main target now and I would do my best to have it online as soon as possible.

(this would mean pestering Euan beyond every belief, but also helping him!  wink )

All agreeable points, Giorgio! smile

Ok folks, break out your banners and baked goods (except in exempted counties of the UK). Candidates, tell us a little about your vision for Phoenix. What do you wish to see us become, what are we doing well, how can we get there?

Start the baby kissing.

My vision for Phoenix? I had found over the past couple of days that that is rather difficult for me to put into words! I can envision Phoenix continuing to rise as club in the RP community, to be rivaled with, both with simming and our inner community. I would say that also describes what I would wish for us to become. I would say that we are well on our way with having won the Simming Prize earlier in the year and also in having hosted Fall Fest last month.

What we can do to get there? Continue the awesome level of Roleplay that we do here, and focus on being active...even if it is as little as just logging onto Phoenix and posting when you can. I know real life can be a pain, occasionally, and I am currently falling victim to only finding time to post on the weekends. (Which is when we seems to be the slowest) Every single active Phoenician is important, instrumental, to not only the sims they currently play in, but also future sims, and Phoenix itself.  Through everyone's efforts I believe Phoenix can, and will, continue to rise.

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

If voted in, I promise more money for public schools, more roads to lessen congestion and a significant boost to the economy!

Wait... What's that? This isn't that kind of Election?

Blast it, I had my speech all planned out... Umm... Umm... Quick, say something witty!

My Goal:

Phoenix has been my home for all my role-playing needs for the past year and a bit, and I feel it's time I gave something back, so if I am elected to the GC position, I will devote as much time as I can to improving the experience of role-playing here.

How would I do this?

I feel that Phoenix's strength comes from its diversity, in characters, sims, and people who occupy the site. My aim would be to increase this diversity, by working closely with the ACO to spread Phoenix across the net in our quest for world domination, as well as to work hard to encourage the more unusual and original sims. I feel that some genres are a little underrepresented here, and that may turn some people away, so this diversity of sims may also lend itself to still further new players and with them, new characters and new stories to tell!

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

Well said Soapy, Misty and Georgio. As a practical question, what could be done to improve Phoenix now with the capabilities and players we currently have?

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

Personally, I'd have to say that aside from some technical issues over the past weeks, Phoenix has been running strong fairly consistently this past year, even with the loss of some truly great Roleplayers...

I also think Euan Reid should be commended for the speed and diligence he showed in fixing what problems did arise, whether speed issues, logging in issues, or simply that all too annoying spam situation we sometimes encounter.

However there is certainly room for improvement. I'd say the best first step would be to push Phoenix 2.0 forward, because as soon as that is up and running, then a overall improvement on the Phoenix experience should (hopefully) have been achieved. However, as this may be a ways off yet, barring the unforeseen hand of fate.

Technical issues aside, Phoenix runs well as a whole, and the main course I can see for improvement would be to increase our interactions with other RP sites, through joint ceremonies, conventions, and even cross-story roleplay. For instance, we have a number of awesome universes that other sites roleplay in (Firefly, Stargate, Star wars etc), so a crossover story arc could be not only fun, but completely doable!

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

I'd like to know specifically how people think we could plan to grow our membership? I think this is a key issue.

Good question!

Why did Suzy fall out of the swing?  Because she had no arms.

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

I think we should search for forums or communities of people interested in our settings, and "advertise" there, gently and without spamming.

For example, I was directed here because I had found a post in the Longest Journey forum (by wandrew, IIRC). We could do another round of "hey, we are here if you are interested" in the various Firefly / Star Wars / Matrix / etc.etc. communities.

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

Personally I feel the Cross-Sims could be a good draw, as members of other sights become aware of us and/or actually see our site, and should one of the many sims available catch their eye, then perhaps we may just have a new Phoenician! big_smile

In terms of a less luck based system, I'd work with our advertising and technical officers to find the best way to push Phoenix into the limelight at every opportunity. This would be partially in that I have found that for someone searching for sims before finding such a community as this, it can be difficult to find what you're looking for. I personally went through several sims that simply didn't take off, and were ultimately shut down, taking the whole site with it as they were "one-sim-sites". However as we don't have that issue, and are still going strong some years after Phoenix's inception, I feel we could really tap into that. The other section would be to strengthen our connections to other communities, and through mutual advertising and cooperation, hopefully we can grow both communities at once!

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

I agree with what Giorgio and Dale have already said...seems that advertising and growing the membership of Phoenix is a recurring theme for us all. And we all know that the membership is what keeps continues to keep communities, clubs, and even sim running and healthy. Many other communities offer "forums" or "boards" specifically for advertising, so we would be able to do so as long as we also were allowing the favor (so to speak) to be returned. To be able to best do this we would need to spend up the competition or what-have-you for the site graphic (and advertisement) and button.

We can reach out, and continue to build relationships with other RP communities. Such as we currently have/are doing with Ongoing Worlds.

Let's not just advertise sims, let's work together as the inclusive community we are and advertise Phoenix Roleplaying.

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

We do have an External Ads forum and this should be made more use of.

Re: Extraordinary General Coordinator Election

Yes, that is what I would like to use for advertising.
