Topic: EVC 2015

Its that time again! (Technically its past time, but the recent AJJE vote required a brief delay). As the beginning of Phoenix election season, first up is the Election Voting Coordinator position. This position once elected will be responsible for running all other elections. The responsibilities of the EVC are laid out in the Roles and Responsibilities section of Phoenix rules. I am happy to guide any candidates through the process to make them comfortable with what the position entails.

Timeline for the election will be as follows:

May 2 - 15 Nomination of Candidates
May 16 - 29 Campaign period
May 30 - June 6 Voting
The voting booth will close at 12:01am Midnight PST on Sunday June 7.

Re: EVC 2015

As a long-time former EVC, I too would be happy to offer any help I can in the details and the processes behind the position.  big_smile

I nominate Kevin Diamond and Robert Longtin.

Re: EVC 2015

Thank you Euan. I would be very happy to win another term as EVC. Accepted.

Re: EVC 2015

I would nominate Kevin Diamond and Robert Longtin... but Euan already did that.  tongue

Re: EVC 2015

Only four days remain on nominations. Pick who you think would be a great EVC now!

Re: EVC 2015

The period of nomination is closed. PMs have been sent to the nominees for their acceptance. We will be quickly moving into a brief campaigning phase depending upon the number of candidates.

Re: EVC 2015

I am declining my nomination. Thank you all the same to those who nominated me!  smile

Re: EVC 2015

Thank you Robert. As we only have one candidate running for the office of EVC this will be a simple yes or no confidence vote. The Candidate (me) will take any questions posed by the membership through Sunday. Voting will open Monday May 25th and conclude on June 1st.

Re: EVC 2015

Are you happy with the current voting technology? Also, how do you think we can increase turnout?

Re: EVC 2015

Might be a good idea to delay the start of the vote a day (To the 26th) due to the Memorial Day holiday. Not sure how many of the voting pool will be busy/offline/away that day.

Re: EVC 2015

Voting is being delayed because I've been very I'll the past few days and haven't set it up. I'll look to start tomorrow.

Good questions Silent. Sorry I didn't get back to them sooner, but breathing hasn't been my friend this week. As for ballotbin, it appears to be adequate for our needs. Could it be better? Very likely. My biggest gripe is trouble putting links in the ballot questions, the character limit on questions and the way that outbound email appears to recipients. But again, it serves our purposes at the moment.

Your second question is a bit more difficult to answer. The last two elections have had higher percentage turnouts than any we have run. The fact is we may never get everyone to respond to elections. On an average phoenix has about 20-25 people that would count as actively participating in the site. By the rules, there are 42 names in the membership registry that count as eligible to vote. At best we will be lucky to do much better than 50% participation just based on active players to membership ratio. The recent AJJE merger vote got an enormous turn out with 25 respondents.  The extra ordinary GC election had 15 respondents, the previous 14, and the GC election prior to that 11. It appears that our response numbers have been improving.

The most effective solution to building up our participation is community building and letting people have a greater sense of ownership in their contributions to Phoenix. The more we grow our bonds as a community, the greater participation we will get in elections and other issues effecting the site. It's important to vote, it's also important to that the membership know that Phoenix is only as great as we the members make her. We all have a voice.

Re: EVC 2015

How is the membership registry determined? Is there a way to make it more automated, especially with Phoenix 2.0?

Re: EVC 2015

It is automated, I tasked Euan with that when we started using ballotbin. Euan has a document that is automatically populated and at the EVC's disposal. I believe we might actually use the same document for the newsletter mailing list, though I was never responsible with its distribution so I truly don't know the answer to that.

The automation was also discussed way back when we decided by public discussion several years ago what constitutes an "active" member.

But the voters selected are from the list of "active members".

Re: EVC 2015

I used the Broadcast email function when I sent out the newsletter, not quite the same thing. Thanks for the clarification though.

Re: EVC 2015

Final 10 hours for anyone still needing to vote. Polls close at Midnight PST.

Re: EVC 2015

Ok, Election period is complete. 19 voters responded. 17 in favor of me and 2 abstaining. 15 votes were made in the first 48 hours. The remaining 4 between days 2 and 5.  I thank you for your confidence as I continue for another term as EVC. Thank you everyone for participating in site governance.
