Topic: Potential Wiki Changes

I wanted to compile the various unsettled Wiki related issues together, see if some sort of "final" decision could be made on them. Feel free to mention any I have missed in this thread.

1) Move the Wiki to our own host at wiki.phoenix-rp.com

(initial post) I brought up moving from WikiDot to Wikia due to the loss of access to the wiki's admin account with Jason's departure. Yes, I understand Jason has returned, so maybe that can be resolved, but it brought up the issue of hosting our own wiki away from either WikiDot or Wikia. Most seemed to be in favor of this from those that commented.

2) Management of wiki admin account

Best I can gather, the current wiki admin account for phoenixrp is under Jason. There are some pages that are unable to be edited because no one has admin privileges. Again, with his return he can probably appoint another admin but the potential issue still remains. How should Phoenix handle access to the admin account for the wiki?

3) RSS feeds

(initial post) I know I've harped on this a lot, but for the sake of keeping the Wiki as up to date as possible, it would be nice if various posts by the GC, or other Admin positions, could be posted on the wiki in their entirety. This allows the ability to have one location that needs to be updated when a change is made, not multiple, and will “behind the scenes” keep the wiki updated with no additional work on anyones part.

I do assume that the forums are the main and primary source of all information, and that it should be updated first and foremost, and not other locations, ie, the wiki, Roleplay Wiki, etc.

For example, if someone goes in and updates the Sim Summaries page on the forums, http://www.phoenix-rp.com/post/2899/#p2899, it would automatically be updated on the wiki within the Sim Summaries page that it was embedded on. Admins changing pages don't have to worry about notifying someone to update the wiki as well.

With our own wiki software in place, this requirement may change depending on capabilities of the new software.

Re: Potential Wiki Changes

Quite a few pages need some updates, I would say.

Re: Potential Wiki Changes

I like #1, even though I don't fully understand the reason behind having a wiki... BUT, having it be wiki.phoenix-rp.com, is much more appealing.

As for RSS feed, I am completely lost.

Re: Potential Wiki Changes

I also fail to see the purpose in a wiki given that a few sticky threads is enough to cover everything a forum sim would need.

It looks nicer and allows us to write longer things than a forum post can contain.

Agreed. It also has an encyclopedia function: I think the wiki is easier to search through when looking for specific information.

Re: Potential Wiki Changes

Maybe you guys should a wiki manager position on top of the GC having overall admin access for the wiki.

Re: Potential Wiki Changes

We have a Wiki Officer, Elrood. But there's some issues getting the password for the wiki admin account. Personally, I think (like Iceblade said) the GC or the TC should have the password or also have admin access in case of instances like we currently find ourselves in.

Any other opinions on moving the wiki?

Re: Potential Wiki Changes

I vote to move it, of course.
