Topic: Military OOC General

I figure we could use this. Just to talk about whatever

Had a conversation with my grandfather recently. He regrets that he can no longer fire and carry his M1 Garand... Real sad thing.

Re: Military OOC General

That is a sad thing. My Dad used to tell me about his Army experiences in 1950s Germany. I suspect my nephews will miss out on that. Or worse yet, not be interested.

Re: Military OOC General

My uh, well my grandfather died before I was born, but my uncle used to tell me about his time in Korea and Vietnam. My dad did as well. Well not so much. He went over for 3 tours. And he only told me one story.

Sad my kids won't ever get to here ol' grandpa's war stories.

Although, something that's funny. I'm named after his M14

Re: Military OOC General

72 years ago, the largest amphibious assault was done on the coast of Normandy as part of Operation Overlord. Which is a badass name. American, British, and Canadian troops landed at Gold, Sword, Juno, Utah and Omaha beaches. And established the beach heads for what would be the war ending campaign.

So yeah, shout out to be Army. Even if D-Day just means the day when a amphib assault is going to go down.

Re: Military OOC General

So, how about a Jargon page for the military OOC general eh?

Maybe have categories and all that.

Or we could do it on a Sim by sim basis.

Life Check in. Since I feel like sharing

I got promoted out of probationary, and I'm now a full time officer. I've been reassigned to Metro Division in riot suppression. Which, is hard, dirty work. And Uh, I'm like doing my best to take care of my niece who's over here.

How about you all?

Re: Military OOC General

As you have probably read already elsewhere, I initially trained as a tanker on an M60A1 MBT, advanced trained as an 11E20R8 (M551A1) tank gunner, then because I could type I was moved into unit supply specialist and OJT'd to became a supply sergeant (76Y20).  I was used as a problem solver by A Troop, and worked for a while as the PLL (Prescribed Load List) NCOIC for 3rd Squadron, 12th Cavalry.  Basically, a parts manager.  My additional duties were as troop NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) NCO and Field Sanitation NCO.  We were extremely shorthanded for most of my tour, with just two men per tank as crew, so I got to go through tank gunnery at Grafenwoehr, West Germany, as a gunner and qualified as Distinguished.  Sgt/E-5 date of rank was 28 December 1974.

Re: Military OOC General

My tale is a long and really stupid one.

I enlisted as a MoS 0331 or Machine Gunner, was trained in the ancient ways of the Mk19, M240 and M2 Browning. I go through School of Infantry and get my assignment. Turns out I get sent to 29 palms as a member of 3rd LAR. End up on a 0311 or basic infantryman billet. They assigned me to the SAW, so I had to learn the SAW. Eventually I entered recon selection. Made recon and I went to Djibouti. Powed around at 29 Palms for a bit, until I had enough and I decided to ECP as a Corporal

Currently, I'm a 2nd Lieutenant and a Grunt Officer and I've got a whole bunch of paperwork to take care of.

Yeah it does. Course grunt officer isn't exactly the cream. We're more like good liquor.

also a question. Now I'm gonna preface this with the "I'm not trying to Judge" but that never works out and'll just make it seem like I am so...

Who's been combat deployed?

Me. Went to Afghanistan in '05. Back then though, we used to joke that A'stan was the vacation spot when AQ wanted to get away from Iraq.

As for background, I was Army Reserve. Civil Affairs (38a10). One of the first to go to the Defense Language Institute. Received my commission through ROTC and went Military Intelligence. Wasn't the best of officers, though.

Weird Tale: My father was one of the engineers who built the naval base at Da Nang, Vietnam during that war. He worked for a company called Raymond-Morrison-Knudsen & Brown, Root and Jones (RMK-BRJ). This later becomes Halliburton, and was the first company to ever do civilian construction in a war zone.
