Topic: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

It is now time for this, so I will begin.

Nominations are now open for these two vital positions on our site. Any member may be nominated - or nominate themselves - regardless of length of time as a member.

Nominations will run from 0000 on Wednesday 14 June - for two weeks, concluding on Tuesday 27 June at 2359. For avoidance of doubt, all times will be Pacific times i.e. 8 hours behind the UK.

There will then follow a two week period of campaigning, from 28 June to 11 July.

Voting itself will be from 12 to 18 July. Unlike in the UK, the system we use means there is no chance of a Hung Parliament.

Let the election commence.

Re: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

I nominate Misty Diamond for General Coordinator.

Re: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

Question? Do we need an election if there is only one candidate for each position?

In that case, we have a vote against Abstain.

Changing such rules is something we can look into after the election. Nothing can be done at this point in time.

Re: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

With only one candidate for each position, this will be a vote between those candiates and Abstain.

Misty Diamond is the sole candidate for General Coordinator.

Euan Reid is the sole candidate for Technical Coordinator.

You may now ask the candidates questions.

Re: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

Misty and Euan, thank you for your willingness to continue in the roles you both have held for a long while. With the reflection and wisdom that comes from knowing these positions quite throughly, what do you each feel needs to be done to make Phoenix thrive with established players, attract new players and keep up with current opportunities in the wider RP community?

Re: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

For the established players, I think finding and addressing the biggest "pain points" is the way to go. What takes up most of people's non-RP time on the site, and how can we cut back on that so people can focus on games?
For new players, advertising. It doesn't matter how well we do at getting people to sign up vs not if nobody comes looking - we need to seriously advertise ourselves so we're getting the foot traffic needed to gain members.
For current opportunities, depends what you mean by opportunities! If you mean dipping our toes into newer forms of online RP, by providing whatever sort of hub we can to facilitate it. If you mean getting involved at a community level, I think that's probably more of a question for Misty to answer as the GC candidate than me, but ultimately "by reaching out to them" and doing what we can to make it easy to partner up, share links, and so on.

Hope that answers your questions Kevin, but if there's more detail you'd like please ask smile

A personal one from me: do you believe that Phoenix is in decline?

I personally think it is the same answer for both established players as well as new players, Phoenix as a whole needs an overhaul. Restructuring the site to make it function better and to draw in new member. To focus on the quality games we have and make them thrive. Graphics. Rules. Government. Did I not state overhaul? Change, folks, is not necessarily a bad thing.

What we look like needs to change, how we play obviously needs a change since we have a GM shortage. Games need to be made fun again.

Advertising! Yes, we need a section that is clearly set aside to allow guest posting for advertising purposes, but we also need to be able to appeal to the guest, with graphics and features and whatnot.

I have tired on numerous occasions to get people that I love to write with to join Phoenix and they rarely get past out index. They don't understand our setup, our navigation so to speak. I have pestered Euan on many an occasion asking what we could do, what we can change, what features we can add.

Current opportunities, I am a tad bit confuzzled by...?

do you believe that Phoenix is in decline?

Yes. And we need to fix this. I have spent the last few years trying to get some changes. Let's do it now before Phoenix does not see it's 10 year anniversary.

I agree with Misty. Yes. We have fewer GMs and fewer players, and whilst our roleplaying quality is as good as ever we have less and less activity. We need to fix this, and that means being willing to make drastic changes. So we should.

Re: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

I truly believe the speed (or rapidity) of posting on sims is a key factor in building or losing an active player roster. You can have all the bells and whistles on a sim, and this is a good thing, but if folks only post once every 7-14 days (or longer), then the sim will fizzle due to lack of continued player interest. The Kestrel has a three day posting requirement, and this seems to keep most of the crew busy.  Just a thought, my friends.

Re: General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator Elections 2017

Yes, posting and activity is a key factor. But as in The Kestrel, I cannot keep up the the other players posting activity and find, on most occasions, the 'scene' has progressed too far for me to be able to either keep up or make a viable, relevant post. But  yes, activity always a given!

I guess I sound like a broken record on the importance of posting... sorry to keep beating a dead horse.
