Topic: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

It was the start of another day in the rather overbuilt starport. The vast array of landing pads and docking equipment remained mostly unused, waiting for an economic boom that had yet to materialise. Much of the latter still had their original shrink-wrap on...

In the main shopping area, where most of the store areas were as yet untaken, some of the vendors were beginning to open their shops, pulling up the blinds and making up their floats for the day.

One of them, a restaurant named Happy Eater, was already open, serving cooked breakfasts to some of the spacers that were here at the moment.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

The woman who made her way through the starport cracked her neck and rolled her shoulders. She'd spent the night in what seemed like a bed for a child in what was the cheapest hotel she could find. Being laid off hadn't done her any favors. Especially being laid off in this sector of the galaxy.

Entering the Happy Eater she took off her navy blue ballcap with an Old English "D" on the front and took a seat at the counter.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

As she took a seat at the counter, one of the guys behind it - who looked like he'd failed his A-Levels and wound up here because there was no-one else - was about to hand her a menu.

Then he looked out the window that faced onto the one of the sets of landing pads and did a double take.

"Is that a Starlink?" he said suddenly. When Jinya turned to look, she could see a blue and white ship coming towards the landing pads, its upturned end wings making it recognisable. It also looked like it wasn't in the best condition, but it was a Starlink. Those were very cool ships.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Jinya turned around and glanced at the Starlink coming down.

"My ship was five years older than that with about 20 times the mileage" She said wistfully as she thought of her ship. Well her companies' ship that she was in command of before getting laid off.

"It's cute though. Bet you could fit in the bay of a big boy" She added.

"Now can I get the menu? I'm working up an appetite that can only be satisfied by greasy food"

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

The guy handed her a laminated double-sided menu, which contained an array of suitably greasy breakfast food, as well as hot drinks and fruit juice.

As she looked at the menu, the bell indicating the opening of the door rang and a dark-haired woman walked in. Dressed in dungarees and a short-sleeved white T-shirt, she was carrying a heavy black satchel, containing something.

Jinya recognised her as Layla 'Shade' Gunther, pilot of the Baldwin Texas class mining ship Jenny from the Rocks.

Layla saw the Starlink coming in and her mouth dropped open.

"Wow! A Starlink! I've only seen those on screens before!" she called out.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Dressed in boots, jeans and a dark red T-shirt, Jinya glanced back at the other pilot before ordering. "I'll get eggs, hasbrowns, sausage and waffles. Oh and Coffee, coffee's important" She added as she listened to Shade gush about the ship. She was feeling twangs of jealousy at her lack of a ship.

"Pretty cool" The atmospheric transport pilot said in response. "Don't see many on the routes I used to run"

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

"There's not that many of them that survived once Mikkei sold them off. About a dozen of 150 built", Shade said, "I think, but don't bet on it that is Alycidon. Owned by one Sunita Kumar. You heard of her? I think she's the daughter of a fairly big businessman and is one tough cookie in her own way".

The guy at the counter, whose name was Howard, wrote down her order and went to the kitchen to get it made.

Shade then opened the case, to reveal a travelling gambler's set with packs of cards, a roulette wheel and various multi-coloured chips.

"Say, I'm running a poker game tonight. Texas Hold 'Em, 500 credit buy in, 40 grand pot. You up?"

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

"Nope, can't say I have. I know very little about the independent spacers" Jinya responded as she rolled her shoulders.

"More Big Boys than Starlinks" she mused as she looked down at the countertop.

"I wonder if she needs too tall too fine pirates." She added before finally considering the poker game.

"Sure, it's something to do. I'm not gonna ask why the pots so big"

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

"Don't even mention the word pirate around Sunita Kumar. She hates them", Shade said, "One killed her husband, tortured her and threatened to hurt her daughter".

She closed the case containing the gambling set and looked at the menu.

"I've got a big ore haul to sell here then I'll be heading out into the deep black again... I actually need some more crew myself. I had to fire my fry cook".

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

"I hate pirates Shade" Jinya said in response. "14 hours of surgery and enough bullets and blunt trauma to make a cybered out Merc look twice. Killed my entire crew on 3 occasions, I was considered a life insurance liability so they put me with cold unfeeling droids." She finished with anger in voice.

In regards to the ore haul she wondered what on earth the backwater that was didcot would do with it.

"Can't say I'm a fry cook" she added

"Well, you could learn", Shade said as Jinya's coffee arrived. Howard had assumed that she liked it black. Hopefully she did.

Coffee was Coffee and Jinya didn't mind it in any way shape or form. She drank a small sip before laughing at shades remark.

"Yeah, yeah I could. Be a good thing to add to my memoirs. Jinya Matsumoto Barrett, From Mechanic to Pilot to Fry Cook"

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Shade turned to watch the Starlink ship coming down to land.

"You know", she said, "Half the traders in town are going to be trying to sell supplies or services to that ship. Even the ones that empty the waste tanks".

She turned back to Jinya.

"We're not leaving for another three days though, so I'll see you at the poker game".

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

"Nothing unusual. But I'm sure I'll have to fly their haul around the planet. Gotta love atmospheric transpo" she said as she polished off the coffee and set it in the counter.

She hadn't agreed to be at the poker game last she checked, but she would probably be there. Nothing else to do

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

The Starlink came and touched down on a pad about four hundred metres away. Even battered and bruised, Alycidon was a magnificent looking vessel. Jinya could see service vehicles making their way to the ship, ready to clean out the water system etc.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Jinya waited for her breakfast, figuring she could make a point to see the ship's captain and see if she was hiring.

She wanted off Didcot

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

The breakfast arrived. It was of medium quality. It occurred to Jinya that the simplest way to see the captain of Alycidon was to wait at the exit to Immigration. It would be where everyone else was going to turn up offering various services.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Finishing up, Jinya left a. Reasonable tip and walked out. Nodding to her server as she did.

Putting on her ballcap she made her way to the immigration terminal, as she theorized her strategy to get an in with the Captain.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Jinya arrived outside the double doors that marked the exit from Passport Control to find that a woman with blonde curly hair was already waiting there, with a silver trolley laden with pastries and other sweet delicacies. A 'cutsey' sign read "Lena's Bakery".

She smiled at Jinya.

"You want a Belgian bun?" she asked, "Only one pound each".

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

"Two please" Jinya said as she dug in her pockets for her wallet, waiting to watch the departures for Sunita Kumar, figuring she might be her way off this planet.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Lena took two of the buns off a tray and put them into individual paper bags as a man arrived; Jinya recognised him as a local taxi driver.

He said something in Chinese to Lena and got a friendly response back.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

Jinya thanked the lady and handed over the coin required, taking in a whiff of the aroma of the buns she looked around the room for someone she knew and, actuallly wanted to talk to before taking a bite of one of the buns.

Re: Didcot - Lord Nelson Starport

There wasn't anyone that she particularly knew and the wait was going to be a fairly long one. To make things worse, an automated fanfare started playing to welcome the new arrivals... New arrivals who had still not arrived from their ship yet.
