Topic: Using the wiki

Hey hey wiki users! I wondered if someone who's competent at adding content to the wiki could go through the resources we've listed in this forum and in each roleplay area's OOC forum and start copying things across to the wiki?

Re: Using the wiki

Great idea! What resources did you have in mind particularly, Ash? It would probably be best to list them out and make them into manageable chunks so those with just a few spare minutes could add something here and there.

So, I guess first step is to parse and list all the resources we want tracked on the wiki.

Ones like this:

And this:

We have them scattered throughout the site. It'd be great to have wiki pages for them too.

Re: Using the wiki

I'm bumping this topic in light of recent conversations on the wiki elsewhere on the site.

Jason, commenting on the current setup whereby you have to get an account on the wiki separate/additional to your Phoenix account if you want to post on the wiki said,

Jason Andersen wrote:

"If it is too prohibitive and people would rather just have guest permission to edit, that can be changed. I'd rather people edit freely and us have to make corrections when needed, then no one using it at all because they don't want to register and get permission.

The best solution would be the ability to use the credentials you have here to use for the wiki, but that would require that we host our own wiki entirely, something I don't think we need to do.

I'm up for guest edits if we can lock some threads, so ones we want to protect from vandalism and unwanted editing could be kept safe?

Any other thoughts? More generally it might be worth some surveys on the wiki, twitter, fb, steam, etc., all our external stuff (I'm not taking credit: Robert suggested surveys recently and Deborah mentioned maybe doing a surveymonkey thing probably over a year ago now regarding the blog etc).

Re: Using the wiki

If we are going to make it open, we should just make it open. Nothing on a wiki is undoable in terms of simple edits.

Re: Using the wiki

I'm not of the position that the wiki should be open, but my gripe about the permissions was that there was nothing telling me I was awaiting approval for those permissions which misled me into thinking the wiki was horribly user-unfriendly and that my problems with editing were related to the interface, and not that I simply hadn't been approved for making the changes I was attempting back when first starting things up there.

If people really want the wiki to be open though feel free to speak up. But I rather prefer it closed so that we don't have unwanted editing from unfamiliar sources, even if it means dealing with the approval system's apparent flaws.

Re: Using the wiki

The problem I have with open wiki-ing are the "graffiti artists". I have yet to see a wiki site that has the open posting that doesn't suffer from these drive by updates.

Re: Using the wiki

Yeah I don't know how subject the wiki would be to random people coming through throwing stuff onto it, but when we've had the problem of spammers on the site and non-members somehow invite themselves to our voting booth (I don't like to bring it up but that problem was from the first referendum we ran long ago and was resolved by making it a "by invitation only" voting booth), I can imagine we will get random people coming onto our wiki, possibly seeing that they have the ability to make changes, and possibly doing things we don't want.

Re: Using the wiki

Surely it is only a matter of getting it right with the granting permission process, and then anyone who wants access can get it and use the wiki.

Now the issue has been raised I'm sure it's sorted, and we don't need to make it open.

As for the wiki itself, I love it. I find it easy to use and edit, and a great resource.

Re: Using the wiki

With the edit to the "How to edit this wiki?" link, hopefully it will be more clear. I also need to make sure to keep an eye on the approval page to ensure people are getting actively approved. Another window for me to keep open indefinitely! wink

Re: Using the wiki

Jason, I am having issues adding my page, Brandon Lovell (user) to the members page on the wiki, not to be confused with the wiki members page. Could you possibly help me out with that?  Also, I should be creating links for Forgotten Realms, Matrix, and AW-75 here soon.

Re: Using the wiki

Sure, I can help. The Members page is actually auto-generated based on the "members" tag. What you want to do is create your user page, then tag it with "members". I see you've already created your user page, so the only step left is to tag that page with "members". I've gone ahead and done that for you, so you should automatically show up on the Members page now.

Re: Using the wiki

That's excellent! :-)

Could I ask that just for the next couple of weeks if people make pages for sims I SL or GM or make changes to existing pages for sims I SL or GM that they either paste the URL here or email it to me.

I've resolved I'm going to have a pop at this wiki-ing soon.

Re: Using the wiki

Absolutely. I haven't begun any others, btu I have been doing that for pages I create.

Re: Using the wiki

Okay, I've got as far as registering an account on wikidot (as Ash Leighton Plom), but I can't edit until I'm given rights to. I couldn't find the 'How to Edit This Wiki' page you mention from the front page. That could probably therefore do with being more visible.

Re: Using the wiki

It's "How to join this site?" on the main page. You have to request joining the Phoenix wiki itself before I can approve you for editing. Or... I've just sent you an invite (you may have to log on to wikidot to see it, not sure if it will forward it to any email you may have set up). By accepting, you should automatically be added.

If "How to join this site?" isn't clear enough, we can add a 2nd link "How to edit this wiki", or add it to the FAQ (or both).

The more accessible it is, the better, I'd say.

Re: Using the wiki

Right, I'm in!

I've even made a few changes, mainly minor tweaks to the wording, to the welcome page, the FAQ, and the history. I think the Election Results page needs an update, though? :-D

Re: Using the wiki

If you hadn't noticed Ash, I've already gone and made changes, AND the issue was definitely that I had no idea I was waiting for permissions so when my attempts to edit were foiled, I thought it was the interface that was unfriendly but actually it was the fact that wikidot didn't kick back a "you are waiting for approval" message to let me know I couldn't just edit as soon as I was done setting up an account.

This is on my to do list, but for the moment I've got a lot on my plate so this will be something I'll have to come back to later...

Would anyone else be up for joining this? It needs a bit of an update and I lack the time.
