Topic: Intro page

It occurred to me yesterday evening when I shared our URL with a friend that we could probably do with a sort of 'About' page instead of the Index as the first page a person sees when coming to our site. A page with some attractive graphics and a summary in a few lines on what it is we actually do?

Re: Intro page

I like the idea of an 'about' page, but I'm not sure it should be the first page a person sees when coming here. Although that is nice for new people who are interested in what this site is about, it is an annoyance to those who come here knowing full well what this site is about and just want to head over to a specific thread. So yes to the 'about' page, but no to making it the standard first page of this site.

Re: Intro page

I would definitely agree we should have a dedicated landing page - in fact I'd like this created before my term ends.

Re: Intro page

The wiki would be a great place to do that, especially if it was linked at the top of the index.

Re: Intro page

That could work, but I think it would be better to have an 'about' button or an 'about this website' (or something similar) button at the top of the index which will take you to a page which is part of this website. It is the usual way to do this and although that of course doesn't mean that it is automatically the best way to do it, I think that people will look for it there. And it might seem a bit strange if that button will take you to another website.

Re: Intro page

I'm not sure about the "usual way to do this", I've seen quite a few sites that have separate hosting for wiki/main page/forums. But if possible, I do agree with Mischa's suggestion.

Re: Intro page

Euan, can we install a dedicated front page to the existing forum?

Re: Intro page

We can, yes. I'd say Mischa's probably right, though, in that the front page should probably be geared towards those who use it most (that is to say, the current members).

Re: Intro page

To be honest, I'm actually thinking of a front page that would cover both. We need a nice shop front as it were, like this long-running sim site.

Re: Intro page

ok...I really liked this before and REALLY think this would be useful not only to members, but visitors as well. There could be a small section for info for visitors. Plus, with the creating of our PARS wing, this intro-dedicated landing page would probably be a very good thing. (Links to PARS and Forum as well as other useful info)

What would the process be for such?

Re: Intro page

The site Silent described as "this long-running sim site" is Phoenix' grand parent.

Yes, indeed it is. One reason why I chose it as an example. STF has been going for 25 years, so it must be doing something right.
