I'm going to nominate Kevin Diamond for Player of the Year, and Greenleaf Skyplex for Sim of Year.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Excellent!

I assume it's possible to make nominations privately?

Either way, I'd like to nominate the following, each category's nominees listed in the order they appear on the user list set to All Users, Number of Posts, Descending:

Player of the Year:
Silent Hunter, for across the board excellence as a writer and player
Jason Andersen
Robert Longtin
Mischa Brendel
James M, for his enthusiasm and his well-meaning characters in all his sims
Amanda Bond, especially for her writing for the Naboo Ambassador on The West Star
Dondi 'dratliff' Ratliff
Misty Wilson
Osprey

Sim of the Year:
Greenleaf Skyplex, with several diverse threads and plots and its overarching plot
The West Star, with its immersive Star Wars feel, intelligent political commentary, murder mystery, and great character dialogue

Sim Leader/ASL of the Year:
Paul 'pauljericho' Baker, particularly for the Jericho
Kevin 'Zuzutoo' Diamond
Mischa Brendel, for his balanced, encouraging, and consistent leadership on the Odyssey which is in my perception currently the best-run sim on the site

GM of the Year:
Silent Hunter, for GMing so many different sims so well across the site
Jason Andersen
Robert Longtin, for the immense amount of work he's putting in to the sims he GMs, especially the Forgotten Realms sim
Kevin 'Zuzutoo' Diamond
Nick Buchanan, for what is in my opinion the most consistent and engaging GMing on the site: the West Star

It's possible I've made some glaring omissions, so I may come back to this but this'll do as a straight off the bat thing. :-)

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Dondi 'dratliff' Ratliff - Player of the Year. For amazing characters across the boards. For some reason I always gravitate to these characters.

Silent Hunter - GM of the Year. Outstanding alternate sims. Special note to Fighter Ops.

Robert Longtin - GM of the Year. Always way above and beyond in planning and follow through.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Kevin Diamond for GM of the Year and for Player too.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Thanks for nominating me! I myself also want to nominate a few people and even if some of them have already been nominated, I still like to nominate them and give the reason why I'm nominating those people.

Player of the Year

Silent Hunter. He puts a tremendous amount of work into the entire website, which became all the more obvious to me since starting the newsletter. Meanwhile he doesn't let any of that work negatively effect the quality of his characters which is in my opinion fabulous.

Ash Leighton Plom. Also a player who creates great characters, but he is also a person you can always turn to for advice, help, feedback; basically anything.

Robert Longtin. Not only did he give me a very detailed explanation of how things work in the voting area, but he also immediately stepped up to work on the newsletter. And when I was looking for additional players for the Odyssey he not only came up with a character rather quickly, but also a marvelous character with a very interesting background of which I probably wouldn't have thought. Many of you will know this character: it is Lizzy Lusko.

Wandrew. He is a player on the TLJ sim. When I set this sim up, he was one of the first to join and came up with a character with a real personality and background. Most of you will know that simply creating a character does not make a character. A good character has personality, a story and many more traits. Wandrew's character has that which makes it all the more interesting for me as GM on that sim. I always look forward with what he has come up with this time. He is also a very active player on the sim.

Kevin Diamond. I find his character Poppy on the Atlantis sim one of the most thought-out and interesting characters. And the way he describes her motives and actions is simply great.

Sim of the Year

For me this is Greenleaf Skyplex. Especially the bombing near the end of the year did a lot to add to this decision. The sim in itself is already great, especially because it is such a large sim; not only does it have a lot of players, but it also has a lot of environments. This could mean that areas tend to be forgotten, but that is not the case in this sim. Everything is so much alive. And then of course the bombing which I did not see coming but fit perfectly.

GM of the Year

For many of the same reasons as stated above, I nominate Kevin Diamond. He of course GMs Greenleaf which I think is no small feat. Not only does he 'manage' the story, but he also comes up with interesting twists that do fit well into the story.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Edit, my nominations (those not already nominated; many of those already nominated I would nominate if they weren't already there):

Player of the Year:
(none)

Sim of the Year:
Dni Infinite Ages - Robert has breathed life into this sim, and has some of the most interesting characters I've seen.
Middle Earth: Fourth Age - The posting quality here is the best of any sim on the site.
Umbra - The last scene, moving around the derelict ship, was one of my favorite moments on Phoenix.

SL of the Year:
Robert Longtin - In every one of his sims, he has made certain to craft a terrifically detailed sim that I am proud to take part in.

GM of the Year:
Paul 'pauljericho' Baker - The tension he has created on board with Mr. Grafton, as well as the utter creepiness of that spacewalk, left a huge impression on me.

Newcomer of the Year:
Irykyl
wanderer
Mike Miller
Osprey

Special mention to Michael Aker, although he is AWOL now, he had some great posts. If he weren't AWOL, I'd nominate him here.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

I also agree with Osprey for Newcomer of the Year.

- Silent

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Also add Raj, who joined us back in March and who I blame almost exclusively for the explosion on Greenleaf, and Spart and Wild Joker; since joining Osprey's sim at the end of November they've both been quite prolific, and possibly Dangerous Cook, who joined us back in April and has been posting well in Wing Commander.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

I totally forgot about the Newcomer of the Year award!

*feels stupid*

Could I change my nomination for wandrew from Player of the Year into Newcomer of the Year? It would be more appropriate to nominate him in that category.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Don't feel stupid Mischa, it didn't exist when you made your nominations! Also, you could always nominate him/her for both, if you like. For now I'll honor your request and move wandrew to Newcomer of the Year.

Adding these:
Raj
Spart
Wild Joker
Dangerous Cook

And moving wandrew from Player of the Year to Newcomer of the Year.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

Could I suggest that there's no reason someone couldn't win both Newcomer of the Year and Player of the Year? That's to say, they're really just being nominated for Player of the Year, and whichever New Player comes highest in our ranking there is the Newcomer of the Year.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

I think that's possibly a better way of working it, but that's assuming we rank people nominated in the judging process. Also we have a rather small committee of judges so ranking the several nominees we put forward each year would be a tall order. But I do much prefer this concept of how to determine Newcomer of the Year as opposed to judging newcomers independently of the rest. It has a certain...diplomacy about it, some je ne sais quoi... There's something definitely attractive about this structure.

Re: Nominations now open for 2012 awards

I do like the idea, but Robert hit the nail on the head with the ranking. We didn't rank all of last year's nominees - it would have been a much longer process if we had.
