Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

Conceivable, but I think in part it may just increase the volume of the text if we include exceptions such as these. I'm of the opinion that it would be better suited as a separate document (maybe even reference it from the original document?) so that the original document is easier to follow.

I'm not thinking your example is a burden, but when we do several exceptions, and eventually create new legislature with its own series of exceptions, and eventually this could just become an exceedingly large document.

Contrariwise, we could clean up the documents by instead making them HTML code with buttons to view exceptions that are default hidden which might be the best way to do it (and I could certainly get on board with something like that).

I feel that would be best. It's what I was working towards for amendments in the Old Country's resolutions amendments, but it never happened over there.

Having dabbled in some law (not that I have the proper licensing to give legitimate legal advice), I've seen some US legislature on websites with the same sort of buttons. Makes things easier to navigate that way.  smile

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

Perhaps it could even just be Amendments to the (currently non-existent) list? For example:

Admin Policy 13: Sim Index Categories (December 2012)
That 'Category' Roleplay Areas (Firefly, Stargate, etc.) be provided for any genre in which we run more than one sim. Genres in which we only run one sim will appear in an appropriate 'Other' category Roleplay Area (i.e. 'Other Sci-Fi').

Exceptions to this rule can be made on a case by case basis if a member proposes a motion (to allow an exception for a particular sim to have its own area) which is then voted on and passes.

Exceptions
War Sims (April 2013)
Star Trek (September 2013)
Espionage (February 2014)

It'd be a bit shorter, and arguably clearer.

--

Regarding Silent's proposed standalone War Sims category, I'd argue against it, personally - why do we need it? What makes War Sims special compared to, say, Espionage? I could see an argument made for having a "Modern Sims" category, in the way we have a "Fantasy" and "Sci-Fi" category, as modern fiction is a fairly clearly defined genre, but that's a different topic.

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

And "Modern Sims" could certainly be a larger category if we combined War Sims with other sims such as SC4 and Saunders Inc. - Corporate Espionage. That makes a lot of sense IMO.

I have a outside question, where would sims that deal with super-powered individuals fit into?

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

I'd say either scifi or fantasy, but I believe the "superhero" genre is generally considered scifi, at least by wikipedia:

"Heroes is an American science fiction television drama series ..."

vs. fantasy:
"Merlin is a British fantasy-adventure television programme..."

Although the lines are certainly not clearly drawn:
"A superhero film, superhero movie, or superhero motion picture is an action, fantasy and science fiction film..."

It could even warrant its own category, or perhaps have a more generic "action" category.

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

So would we rather consider coming up with a category that includes Fighter Ops and at least 1 other sim together and then it need not go to vote and can be resolved quickly?

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

Given the current legislation simply reads "Genres in which we only run one sim will appear in an appropriate 'Other' category Roleplay Area (i.e. 'Other Sci-Fi').", I'd say we can just choose to sort a few sims into "Other Modern" without a vote.

-Euan

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

How about "Military and Espionage Sims"? Then we could move Wing Commander in there.

Silent, who does realise he'd still run every sim in the category.

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

Right, and we could conceivably include Saunders Inc. as well (as "Espionage"?).

Shall we move then to disregard the former post to keep the "War Sims" category open and utilize this "Military and Espionage" category?

Excellent idea. Do we want the WC sim in there?

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

I don't see any problem with that. Actaully I don't think that's really pending any legislative actions. That might be something to put in a new resolution (what needs to be done in order to move a sim to a new category that it fits into, i.e. SL approval, a certain amount of time, a vote, etc.). So if you're in favor of it, I say go ahead!  big_smile

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

I don't know that any legislation needs to be put in for it, I think if the SL and the SC/GC agree, it can just be done. We've pretty much left it to the SLs to decide where their sims should be placed in the past. I suppose there is something to be said to have it in writing but it seems unnecessary until a problem exists.

Yeah, I think keeping this a flexible power that doesn't need a vote is more efficient.

In the admin forum I proposed a revised order for the Index. I amend it here:

Can I propose we rearrange it something like this:

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

My thought was just to add clarity on how it works so that the SL's get a fair shake on the management of where their sims are located. For instance, right now there's nothing saying sims can't be arbitrarily moved against the SL's knowledge so I'd like to see some legislature to correct that.

Also I think it would be good to have a time interval of maybe 2 weeks from the point at which the move is decided to the point at which the sim is actually moved so that the SL can get the message through to their players that they'll be moving the sim to a new category so that their players will know where to look before the move actually happens. That could be equally said of Category OOC's that are being merged or split apart though I think it's the sims and the players of those sims where the impact will be felt the most and where the advanced warning will be rather important.

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

Actually in retrospect, the time interval should correspond with the site-wide AWOL policy of 30 days and then maybe add something to either the legislature or the automatic e-mail generated after 30 days AWOL saying something about the player potentially missing legislative action pertaining to their sim...I'm having a difficult time wording this one, but hopefully you get what I mean. My feeling is if they hit 30 days AWOL, it becomes their responsibility to find out where their sim was moved, that sort of thing (I'm sure we're all mature enough that we'd take that responsibility whether or not the site rules says we have to, but for future purposes I think this might be a good thing to have somewhere).

Ash, would you mind bolding the items that are different/moved in your list? I don't see a huge difference besides moving the Welcome thread outside of "Site" (although I DO wonder why, isn't welcoming people part of the Site?)

Robert, I'm not adverse to legislation if you think it will help in some way.

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

My thinking in putting the Welcome thread on it's own was to make it stand out even more. Some people wouldn't give the Site section a glance and might therefore miss the welcome thread entirely. But that's just my suggestion, I'm happy for it to be debated.

Regarding your suggestions, Robert, you make good points. I emailed my players in my Stargate sim when we were moved to Other Sci Fi and even though Silent had posted several notices saying he was going to move the sim and then notices that he had moved the sim, some of them apparently still hadn't noticed until I explained to them. You know, that might be a simple solution. Have it that the SL has email their players within the sim AWOL limit to notify them of the move?

As for highlighting changes, let me describe them with some reasoning, and I'd welcome discussion:

  • Moved Elections and Voting to be immediately below Management as these are kind of the workhorses of our democracy.

  • Tech Support and Sim Proposals put together as they seem to me to be related.

  • External Ads and Alliances on its own. This could easily be elsewhere in the list, though.

  • Member Support and Sim Discussion, Awards, and General Chat put next to each other as they seem akin in my mind. I thought it best to keep General Chat at the bottom of the list so it's easy to find.

  • No changes to Firefly and Star Wars

  • War Sims category closed (Fighter Ops and OOC moved, see below)

  • No change to Post-Apoc.

  • The Triple First renamed to make it explicit it's a Doctor Who sim

  • Wing Commander moved (see below)

  • New area called Military and Espionage Sims opened after Other Sci Fi area
Fighter Ops, Wing Commander, Saunders Inc. - Corporate Espionage, moved here, plus a new Military and Espionage Area OOC with the old War Sims area OOC folded in

I think that's about it. I do feel the Site forums need a rejig, but I'm not convinced of how best to order them.

In order:
1. Done.
2. Do you mean in the same forum or next to each other on the list?
3. Good suggestion, although I'd like to hear other thoughts.
4. I'd prefer to keep Member Support with Tech Support. General Chat is best at the bottom.
5. Agree
6. Agree.
7. Done. Don't know why I did not do that earlier.
8 & 9. Do we want to add Sierra Charlie Four and make it "Military, Espionage and Law Enforcement Sims"? Or we could called it Military, Espionage and Law Enforcement Etc. which gives us the acronym MELEE.

Re: General Discussion Thread for Elections and Voting

I don't think that Tech Support and sim proposals are closely related. Wouldn't sim proposals be better placed close to sim discussions?

Love the acronym MELEE, so whatever it takes to keep that is good with me.  tongue
