Topic: GC/TC Elections 2013

While he will stepping down as Election Coordinator, Robert Longtin has graciously offered to stay in post temporarily to run our overdue elections for General Coordinator and Technical Coordinator. After this, I will appointing a new EVC to take us to April next year.

If nominated, I will be running for a second term, but I will make it clear now that it will be my last as General Coordinator - I plan to stand down after that.

Do members wish for this to be a 11-month term taking us to May 2014?

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

That would be my wish, even though the election is late this year, we should still make May our GC/TC election month for consistency and (I think) to keep in line with the rules already laid out (I don't recall if the rules state actual months, or simply general 'around May' timeframes).

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

What Jason said. Sticking with May in future seems the wise way.

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

Well, the Roles and Responsibilities (eg "Section II - The General Coordinator, Article 1", "Section IV - The Elections and Voting Coordinator, Article 1", and "Section V - The Technical Coordinator, Article 1") set out that the offices of GC and TC "shall last a term of 12 months running from as early in May as is convenient to the General Membership" and the office of Elections and Voting Coordinator "shall last a term of 12 months running from as early in April as is convenient to the General Membership", so while it is about convenience for the members, it is intended to allow for a yearly routine with EVC elections in April and GC and TC elections in May.

Spring seems to me to be a good time for elections. :-)

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

The schedule for the GC/TC Elections is as follows:

Nominations: 6/15 - 6/30
Campaigning / Q&A: 6/24 - 7/7
Voting: 7/10 - 7/23

Apologies for not getting a schedule up sooner. I like to have each period end on a Sunday and run for 2 weeks so I've extended the Nominations period slightly so that it ends on a Sunday, but everything else is fine. Campaigning starts today (opening a thread for it shortly)!

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

Apologies for the delay on this front! Once I have the voting booth up and ready then I'll modify the schedule as appropriate to still allow for 2 weeks of voting.

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

The voting booth is setup, it will officially open tonight at midnight Eastern Standard Time, and will promptly end after 2 weeks of voting.

Because there are more than 2 people running for TC, the TC elections are being done by Ranked Pairs. Visit the tutorial here. Also on the ballot will be simple instructions on how ranked pairs works, essentially you're just ordering the candidates from top to bottom, most preferred to least preferred.

As usual if you do not receive your invitation to the voting booth (they're being automatically sent out in just under 14 hours from the time of this post) or if you run into problems voting, please send me an e-mail asap!  big_smile

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

Robert, why did you choose ranked pairs to vote for the TC? Yes, there are more than two candidates, but wouldn't it make more sense to simply have everybody cast one vote on their favourite TC candidate? That is how elections are normally run. Your option would allow for a candidate to win who has never been chosen by someone as their favourite candidate, but who just happened to be on a lot of number 2 places in the ranked pairs list.

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

I'll address your question with a few responses, but first I'll reference our legislature:

Admin Policy 11: Election Voting (February 2012)
[...]
8. Where there are more than two candidates for a position, voting will be by ranked pairs, i.e. voters will be presented with the opportunity to rank the candidates in order of preference and the most popular candidate will win.
9. Using ranked pairs enables us to determine the next most popular candidate running for a position in an election in the event that any candidate withdraws their candidacy after the voting is tallied, sorted, and locked.

So for clarity it's not that I'm choosing now to do this, it has been in our legislature all this time we just haven't ever had more than 2 candidates.

What you say can be valid but it's missing a very important point. The person with a lot of number 2 places (I'll call this person John B.) can only beat a person with a lot of number 1 places (call them John A.) if the people that voted John B on average voted John A. lower than the #3 place and simultaneously the people that voted John A. voted John B. more highly.

Here's where I first outlined Ranked-Pairs for everyone to see and understand the benefits, so I might like to refer you to this post where I outlined the fact that ranked-pairs produces a more popular elected official than basic plurality (and even pointed out the possibility of what you described but explained how it's actually better than putting in the person with the most #1 votes).

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

Well, if it's legislature than it's legislature, so that is settled then.  smile

But I don't think the other argument is always true, although in large part it also depends on how you score the different positions and under the condition that there are more than four candidates.

But since legislature has already settled this, let's not go into that. Thanks for clearing it up for me, Robert!

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

When the election results come out, everyone will be able to see them and I think people will be happy with the turnout.  cool

If people would like to discuss Ranked-Pair voting a little more we can open up a separate thread to discuss it.  smile

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

I would like that. It's not so much that I'm against ranked-pair voting, but to me it seems that simply voting for one favourite candidate seems more logical and I am curious about the arguments in favour of the ranked-pairs voting. So let's open up a discussion thread for that.

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

So you'll notice I've given Silent a "bio" in the elections. Euan was supposed to have one too, but I guess ranked-pairs on this site doesn't allow the bio to be visible, but all the bio says is that they're the "Incumbent" for the office in which they're running.

Has Jason accepted his nominations? I was under the assumption that question was hypothetical and not a formal acceptance of a nomination.

And thus perhaps we should change the elections so that GC and TC are not elected at exactly the same time.

But since there isn't any specific rule preventing it, I'll accept both nominations. This could be interesting!  cool

Ah, right. Thanks.

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

Do you want me to put out a reminder to vote in a week or so's time?

Re: GC/TC Elections 2013

Actually I generally issue reminders straight from ballotbin since it lets me send reminder messages specifically to people who haven't yet voted. Thanks though.  wink
