Topic: Banner for Facebook page

Although we have got a Facebook page, that page doesn't have a banner. And while we could simply copy the banner from Phoenix Roleplaying itself, that would be a rather poor solution, because Facebook banners have different sizes than our own banner has. And so we turn to you, dear artists. Are you feeling up to the challenge to create a nice representative banner for our Facebook page?

Re: Banner for Facebook page

The size for the fb banner?

Re: Banner for Facebook page

According to Facebook, the banner should be at least 400 pixels in width and 150 pixels in height.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I would expect you need to double, perhaps triple that proportion. 400×150 is very low resolution. 1200×450 would be very clean, but a much larger file than 800×300.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Good point, Kevin. So let's indeed make the minimal resolution 800 (w) by 300 pixels (h). Bigger is better (in this case) but not mandatory.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

So a contest then? With a deadline? Maybe a vote to decide the winning one? Could try the poll system here if folks didn't want to use ballotbin.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I would dare to raise the biddings.

As Mischa stated, a simple adaption of the Phoenix main logo would be a poor solution. Not only for the different sizes involved, but also because the source materials (the plume, the text) are not readily available, and there is not much to work with.

On the other hand, a Facebook banner very different from the main logo could generate confusion in new users and visitors... "hey, I saw that amazing cool banner on FB, but why here there is only a red plume?"

Then my daring (and maybe impudent) proposal is... why we don't create a completely renewed Phoenix logo (rather, a graphic theme) to be used everywhere, on the main site, on FB, on the link buttons, and so on?

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I agree.

Would the same size for the FB one work, or a different size?

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I dare say if we are going that way, we should figure out what we want an official phoenix logo to look like before we get into banner treatments.  So to start the conversation...

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Yes! Yes! Yes! This is exactly what I mean with "graphic theme"! A set of modular elements glued together with a common idea: the plume & the red flames, to symbolize the legacy with the old logo, but also able to be resized, used alone or with the complete name, ready to be placed on a complex background for a big banner, or standalone for a button or a footer.

Bravo, bravo, bravo Kevin. #4 is my favorite, but really it's hard to choose. Great job!

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Not really sure what to say about this one... except it was really, really fun to make and watch everything mesh together!

Gorgeous background Misty. I'm up for combining ideas...

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I like where this is going! I'm all for thinking up a common theme for both this website and all (social) media affiliates. I'd say that we should indeed look for something with both a logo and the name in it, but the logo in itself should be usable as well. That could make for a nice avatar for our Twitter account, for example. I'd also like a logo that could be used (possibly as a watermark) for the newsletter, so that the common theme is in there as well.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Amanda Bond did it, in a competition way back when.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Okay, we're not making selections for the actual banner, just the logo to use with it?

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Presently we are just discussing about the possibility of changing/updating the whole graphic signature of Phoenix. The awesome drafts by Kevin demonstrate that such an update is possible. The actual change will surely require a deeper discussion and a vote of the whole community.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Yes, although it started out as a request for a Facebook banner, there seems to be much interest in creating a new graphic signature (well put, Giorgio!) for the site and all the official Phoenix channels (which are currently Facebook and Twitter, I think. Silent Hunter's blog is as far as I know his blog, so it would be up to him if that would change style as well). When this has been sorted out, I think an official contest/request will be put out.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I can certainly change the style of the Phoenix blog if you want.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

Well, it's up to you of course, but if we agree on a new graphic style for Phoenix Roleplaying and the surrounding media, it would be nice if the blog reflects that style as well.

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I would agree, anything that is an official information site for Phoenix (Facebook,  Twitter,  newsletter, blogs, etc..) should have the branding of the logo, text treatments and color scheme. There is of course room for variation, but the elements should instantly affirm their identity as Phoenix. All advertisements should be branded. And we should like the look enough to keep it for a long time. And all this started from wanting a banner...

Re: Banner for Facebook page

I have graphic assets for various other things (like the Phoenix awards) that could be used as well (although scraped from the 'net, so not sure if they are copyrighted or not). I seem to recall at some point asking Amanda for the PSDs for the original banner. I may have that laying around somewhere too, if she gave it to me.
