Topic: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Ok folks, almost time to kick off! Back in August at the meet I had a (very) rough outline for our own site. There's some changes I'd like to make, but since I'm about to run out the door to karate, I'll just post up what I thought up then. Remember - phoenix being as it is, EVERYONE is free to comment on EVERYTHING in this, and hopefully we can make something that the majority are cool with. I definitely like the idea of having traditional forum/MARS&PARS-esque view/other available simultaniously, for example, since that means folk can have what they want.

In August, I wrote:

Phoenix Roleplaying
-Login (cookie, expires after 1hr no activity)
-Hub page (characters, genres, tech support, site management - elected president?, "favourite sims"?)
--Genre page (sims, "member support", ooc, genre management - elected & appointed?)
---Sim page (motd, roster - support etc use same format)
----Posts & Replying (similar style to AJJE, better presentation in some way - less daunting to newbies)
----Admin panel (add/change/remove characters/topics/ranks/roles, sim awards)
---Management panel (automated voting system to open/close sims, approve images?, genre awards, things appropriate to genre role)
-User CP (set absence, change email/password, upload image)
-Site Management (appropriate to role stuff)

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Do we have a mockup? I can try to generate one if we don't already have something (at the very least a Photoshop image).

Nothing yet - just a rough outlay from my head of how it'll look structurally. In terms of appearance, feel free. Everyone's welcome to contribute.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

The list is great Euan. Very comprehensive.  smile

I look forward to seeing anything anyone wants to bring forwards. :-)

Euan, I loved how you summed it up in your first post in the Posting System Situation thread, "The intention is for it to be our own system, custom made by us, to do what we want and need it to do."

I think we're definitely moving towards a multi-format system perhaps with post-and-reply being the default, but with the option of viewing it in other styles (like email, a forum like this one, etc.).

Let's focus this discussion on the technical/practical side of things, though. I think we can discuss the administrative/constitutional aspects (i.e. elected/appointed positions) in Management and by referendums.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Technically speaking, what I would list to see:

1: A preview button. For the love of all that is good in the world, a preview button for my post.
2: I prefer the current format, where I am not reading every post. Am I the only one?
3: Character icons that are 150 x150.
4: Optional: A spoiler! button. Usually if you click on it, it reveals the spoiler below. It's not necessary, but they are fun when you have to blab about the move you saw last night or something.

Understand, I have the technical skills of a monkey that has been left in a computer lab - so I've figured some things out but if you asked me to program I'd probably just fling poo at you.

To answer your items that I have my own opinions/questions to:

1. We already have a preview button - unless you're referring to something completely different unrelated to this medium for gaming? It's just to the right of the button that you click to submit your post.
2. I agree! And if I wanted to look back, I have the option!
3. It would be nice to expand this in such a way that inputting character icons is easier for the user...
4. We can always use BBCode to change the text color to white and indicate above it "Spoiler!" at which point the user can highlight the text below (should be indicated). I've already done this in some posts on here (without indicated that I did so, to see who might, for pure S&G's do something like that - a sort of Easter Egg), though I have long since forgotten where and apparently nobody has found them yet! ^_^

1. I meant if we moved from our current home to a brand new home with a brand new coding system that we must keep the preview button. *CLINGS TO IT OUT OF DESPERATION AND FEAR*
2. YAY you agree with me!
3. If I remember correctly the size of icon that a player can use it is controlled somewhere in the master code where the maximum an icon size can be is X by X. As for character icons, normally on boards you register a new account for each character. Yes, it's as big of a pain in the *** as it sounds.
4. Ooooh....linkage to where you do this Robert? While River Song may say NO SPOILERS, I personally love them.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

If you can find the link you are welcome to it!

I have no clue where I did that! But obviously take a look at the bit that says BBCode above the Text Box...

I'm pretty sure River Song says, "Spoilers!", not "No spoilers." wink

And I LOVE the way she says it too. One of my fav DW characters ever.

Also, "Hello sweetie." Awesome.

Would we able to integrate banners into character profiles? I know I'd like to do that.

A quick mockup, I'm going to produce something a bit more polished hopefully:

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Perhaps we'll go down the ubershiny route (maybe) - put together a system, a default view.... and then throw out an API so people can build *any* view they like.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

For my two cents worth, I would keep in mind that most (not all I concur) of our categories and sims are science fiction themed. A darker background and more futuristic background might be nice. I know I always jump in on colors and look of things. It's just nice to have an objective in mind while laying down the functionality. Good design shapes the environment and accentuates the content for the acceptance of the user.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

@Kevin: I agree, but skinning is relatively easy. Good UI is not. Mockups help quite a bit in visualizing how the UI will work.

Unless we do some really wacked out stuff with scifi UI. wink

@Euan: That is a huge ball of wax. Would it be easier to start with a modular system that implements a single view, then build up from there?

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Jason - that's the plan, but I'd say a healthy dose of abstractionry is good, since it saves rewriting loads of stuff.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

This is so exciting guys! Wow!!

Is it too early to start talking estimated dates of completion, or would you rather really get your teeth into the nuts and bolts of it before we talk targets?

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Setting a target is a good way to force something to be done.

I propose we set a target as to when we will have a target set.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Well, if we were to set a target as to when we will have a target set, we'd need a target for when we're going to set a target as to when we will have a target set. And that'd need a Target Initial Making Estimate When Actually Something That's Indirectly Nearly Good-to-go (or T.I.M.E. W.A.S.T.I.N.G.) conflab before we could even begin to discuss the eventual... um... where was I?

Joking aside, this ball's in your court, Euan. We'll go at your pace.
