Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

I've been coming up with a Target Initial Making Estimate When Actually Something That's Indirectly Nearly Good-to-go due to uni pressures - read, nothing much at all, I'm afraid.... sad

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Uni comes first, naturally.

Can we get a roll-call of the folk currently available to help with this project under Euan's stewardship?

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Looks like progress'll be slowerthan we'd hoped if of the original team of volunteers, Euan now has just Jason (and then only if 'My life for Aiur' means 'Yes, count me in as a volunteer on this project and all other projects now that I come to think of it', which is what I'm assuming it means).

That being said, I suggest we prioritise some of the improvements we're making here, but keep generating ideas and code for our future home...

I think we should take a rain check on Phoenix 2.0 just while we check for teething problems with the newly restored site. Then in a month or three really get focussed on building the new site.

Ultimately I think this is up to Euan regarding what he can reasonably take on at this transitional time. Euan, I'll support your call either way.

Heh, while I understand and respect the sentiment, there is a lot that can be done that doesn't require Euan's time (such as fleshing out the feature set, as I mentioned in the other thread...) smile

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

I know I've been away for some time and I certainly am not aware of all the technical stuff that comes to updating these forums, but I agree with Jason to make those changes now. At this moment people are still used to the 'under construction' situation going on here. Fixing everything up and then changing things, which may very well lead to some minor issues and/or downtime of the forums seems to me to be more of a hinder to people than trying to do (some of) those updates right now, when everybody is still settling in. It's like when you move to a new home: if you know you are going to redo the kitchen, you will want to do it as soon as possible, and not after you've settled in, only to make a mess of your new home again.

Alright, those are fair points. It's down to Euan's availability, then; I know he's busy in RL. I'll badger him about this forum.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Just out of curiosity can we filter at all stuff like this when they sign up. I certainly understand the frustration of signing up for a site like this and having to wait to get permission to post. But these guys are getting a bit too aggressive in spam. Maximum Extermination!!

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

A Human Verification system such as CAPTCHA would be very helpful here. I brought this up a while ago, but now that we're on our own site sorta-thingy, is this a possibility Euan?

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

I would certainly favour that, although it's not going to stop a human that intends to spam.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Right, although bots like what we have frequently seen in the past will be stopped.

But really it's a moot point to bring up humans with the intent to spam because it is impossible to pull off that level of filtering. Besides which, as the name implies, human verification is meant to filter out bots that auto-apply to sites. But really, who knows, one day a long-term member might have a mental breakdown and begin posting the alphabet 26 times per thread every day at noon and then post the alphabet backwards 26 times per thread every night at midnight, or maybe someone's account gets hacked and the hacker posts spam. I'm being facetious, but seriously the idea here is to filter out as much spam as possible without needing extra steps in between - bot spam is incredibly annoying and at least some of it can be avoided through the use of a human verification system.

I'll see about adding a captcha to the signup. Shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Nice one, and it's good to see this is already up and running.

A summary of some points I've made in related threads:

We're thinking of changing the CAPTCHA question from one asking what planet we're on (it means in RL, but could be confusing if you're playing on Greenleaf Skyplex at the time, to name just one example!) to a simple bit of maths, and to have it asked only on a player's first ever post so as to keep spam bots out while minimising the inconvenience to legitimate members.

Re: [Phoenix 2.0] Roughly outlined plan

Instead of asking such a question with his or her first post, it would make more sense to ask the question when he or she would register.

I agree - it would save us a lot of unused accounts.
