The intelligence section is responsible for collecting and analyzing intelligence information about the enemy to determine what the enemy is doing, or might do, to prevent the accomplishment of the unit's mission. This office may also control maps and geographical information systems and data. At the unit level, the S2 is the unit's security officer, and the S2 section manages all security clearance issues for the unit's personnel. Other duties of the S2 often include intelligence oversight and physical security.

so guys how may ponits do i get for my google- and wiki-fu ?

Good job Spart, you win the Internet. smile

Though I'll add some two shops are quite extensive, with hundreds of people (An example would be the G-2 of SOCOM (SOuthern Command, responsible for Africa and parts of the Middle East). Or the G-2 of US Army Europe. Others are two or three individuals.

Don't get me started on the six (officially five) types of Intelligence. smile

Also, my apologies for the jargon.

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

It's a proposed military sim.. ain't jargon fun?  Mine is 40 years out of date, though.  I had forgotten how much jargon made its way into every conversation at that time... along with four letter vocabulary.

It gets kind of crazy sometimes.

Anyways though, we all set for the Multi National Quick Reaction Force made up of the 101 Airborne 1st Marine Division, and Some to be named British and German units?

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

I'm throwing my two cents into this way too late I imagine but many years ago our local table rpg group played Twilight 2k a few times and we had fun with it. To me the best part was much of the war had already occurred and both sides were beaten to a pulp, disorganized, roaming about often on their own. In the case of the Americans, maybe more concerned with getting back across the ocean to home!

Our group always had quite a mixed bag of characters thrown together like a tank officer without his tank, a medic from a corps hospital that no longer existed, a deserter from the East German army, and other ragtag soldiers. Oh yeah, we even had a network reporter who was the only survivor of his broadcast team sent to the front.

I think that would be really fun to do as opposed to some tight knit specialist bunch of top notch soldiers. But then that's just me I guess.

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

Well, thanks for your two cents. I'll add them to the mutual fund. But yes, that is how I was going to do it. I feel like the focus has been misconstrued so I'll clearly state it

Basically, you're members of a 3 part task force who was sent to (Not sure on the country yet) during the war. And you're whats left of it. Most of your are Rear Echelon, with a few grunts mixed in.

The special forces idea, seemed. Too much.

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

If that's the case, I'd like to play a character in my secondary MOS, 76Y20, or Unit Supply Specialist/Armorer.  A group of REMFs needs someone who can scrounge and repair weapons.

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

Ahhh, OK Carlos, that does seem more like TW2K then. big_smile  I would be willing to take a char then. Leaning toward a medical type right now. Or, depending on the country we are roaming around in, maybe a local sympathizer with the NATO cause if we are still doing NATO.

My own preference would be 2000 over 2020 due to the whole tech bit (communications, drones, and a whole lot else in new weaponry by then I'm guessing) but in the end it's your call, your game!

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

With tech I'm just going to change the standard rifle, and drones run out of power. And break, not going to be a lot of lasers or anything. Although going back to your original post G. I do want the group to be somewhat tight knit, as any group who've lived this long would be.

Also, you don't have to play a REMF, but you totally can.

So the setting is to be in Europe on or about 2000 A.D.?

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

Now I'm thinking of playing a cryptologic linguist. Somehow the idea of a brainiac whose only real skill is near native fluency is entertaining to me.

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

I guess I'll play a 0313-LAV crewman, without their LAV

I'd like to have some useful skills

I have no clue what a REMF even is, sorry. I was not in the military.

Hi, friendly neighborhood ex-military here. smile

It's an acronym for Rear Echelon Mother F****r i.e. a person who stays in relative safety at a base in the rear taking care of supplies, personnel matters, intelligence analysis or any of a number of other jobs. Another term I've heard used is FOBbit, or fobbit, where FOB is an acronym for Forward Operations Base, which again is a place of relative safety as opposed to the infantry, cavalry and other people out in the field.

I say other people because Civil Affairs and Human Intelligence collectors are also frequently found outside the base.

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

I'd like to play a combat engineer. Someone's got to know how to fortify things and stuff. Or a mechanic

"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?" -Harry Callahan

Hi, I'm from Detroit! (Yes it did suck)

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

I think I'm going to switch and play a reserve (i.e. part time) Civil Affairs specialist whose full time job is college student. That way I don't kill everybody with jargon. smile

I'd be willing to help contribute, though my jargon only dates to 2007.

CarlosBeLoLo wrote:

That's actually a superb idea and should be something done for the whole site. Maybe on the wiki?

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

The jargon listing is an excellent idea but I would prefer it be right on the game forum and only pertain to the game for those players to utilize. If you include jargon for all games it only makes for more work, much bigger list, and confusing to know if it pertains to the game you as a player are in.

Oh and any idea where our group is going to be operating in? I guess I'm assuming Europe but will it be Germany, Poland, Ukraine, etc?

Also the Warsaw Pact died way before 2020 so is it NATO against Russia? That would have been pretty onesided. The Russian army is nowhere near as big anymore.

Yet another reason I like the old TW2K in that they have NATO v.s.Warsaw Pact, more balanced. Yep, I realize by 2000 there was no WP anymore but when they made the game they didn't know that.  tongue

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

Uh yeah. Jargon for Twilight 2k would work. Also G. While the Russian army may be very Small, the NATO armies are also tiny now. Only one with any real military strength is China

Wouldn't China take advantage of the situation?

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

I agree with keeping it T2K specific - there's nothing wrong with other sims creating their own lists, but having to wade through a bunch of U.S. military jargon to understand what someone said about aviation in Area 88 would be confusing.

Another possible scenario might be an alternate history a Soviet Union in which Andropov didn't die, and therefore Gorbachev never became Premier. A casual glance at Wikipedia suggests that Andropov was more of a hawk than Gorbachev. Regardless, Putin still comes to power.

As for setting it in Germany - oh, man, I was stationed in Heidelberg. Wouldn't mind returning in a sim.

Re: A Twilight 2k esque or Mercenary Sim

Krista,

Strategically China might take advantage to attack Taiwan and reunite the Chinese. Get embroiled with Japan and maybe go south to hit the Vietnamese but regardless, no Chinese troops would get as far as Europe which I guess most of us are assuming our chars will be roaming around in.

I like mlb38's idea of the Soviet Union not collapsing so we could still have the Warsaw Pact and of course obviously NATO.

Guess we can leave the details to the GM though.
