Re: Main Promenade - The Hub - Deck 3

"None taken. I understand your position, Administrator. If they start squeezing the lower decks, the foundation cracks and everything crumbles." It was an unstated fact that the seedy underbelly of the station is what really brought the money in.

"My stake in this is just as high as yours. I'll keep an eye on Maczarek's people, and scale back their presence if it's needed." In reality, Langford's stake was likely higher than Scarlett's was, considering all the bribes he took to look the other way from the business conducted in the lower decks.

At that moment, their coffee was delivered. Langford paused in what he was saying to take a sip.

"Delicious. Wonderful recommendation, Administrator."

He took another sip before adding, "This month's expense report should be on your desk by the end of the week. I think you'll be pleased with it. The new contract we have with Maczarek has lowered costs by four percent. And if we do indeed find the need to scale back, that will save us even more."

Of course, the expenses had actually been cut back by fourteen percent. But Langford had upped his own budget slightly. It was always good to have a bit of a slush fund for 'morale'.

Re: Main Promenade - The Hub - Deck 3

At that point, a Maczarek Security guard walked up to Scarlett, holding a bit of paper in his hand.

"Ma'am", he said, saluting sharply, "Sir. We understand that there is a Wallenstein vessel, the 35,000 ton light carrier Rostock, docked at this station and we would like to request a land-lock, pending a warrant from planetary authorities for a search of the vessel. We believe that important evidence may be found on that ship and that it not be allowed to leave".

Arkwright did not believe that the Wallensteiners were directly involved in the murder, but there was firstly a small possibility that someone from the company had done it, secondly a possibility that a uniform had been stolen and thirdly, a deep sense of satisfaction that would follow from causing an inconvenience to their business rivals.

She was always pleased that she and the Marshal saw things fairly similarly. She knew what it took to make him look the other way, but also knew he needed to keep their home a secure place to live. She took up the cup of coffee and breathed in its strong aroma before tasting it. A good cup of coffee always made life seem a little more bearable.

"I'll make sure to give your expense report proper attention." Her comment was interrupted by the arrival of the uniformed Maczarek man. She listened to his request. Even if she approved the land lock, a vessel the size of a small carrier could easily rip away the mooring clamps if they chose to leave in a hurry. Land lock didn't mean as much without the land to lock to.

"Marshal, it seems to me this is a matter concerning you, not the planetary authorities." She redirected to the Marshal. She hated when planetary police got involved. Way too much paperwork and prying hands and eyes.

The Marshal wasn't too happy about being interrupted in their coffee break.

"Hmm, perhaps you are right, Ms. Administrator. Although you'll need to sign off on keeping them, as the dockmaster. Or just not give them clearance to leave," he said, winking.

Turning to the messenger, he lowered his voice significantly, "Remember what section of the station you are in as you report. What evidence has been uncovered to warrant a search of the vessel?"

The shop wasn't too busy, so it was likely they weren't being overheard. But he still didn't want to cause a panic on the upper levels. It was important that the upstanding citizens who did their business here felt safe. He almost considered leaving, but didn't like the message that could have sent. A security messenger coming in and reporting news and then his leaving immediately would make people assume trouble.

The guard realised his error and also lowered his voice.

"A Wallenstein Security badge was found clasped in the hand of the deceased woman. As per this and the journey poisson principle of criminal evidence gathering, we believe that there is a connection between that company and the murder that warrants further investigation. We could just ask, but we will not get cooperation".

He knew full well why - they didn't even need to ask. No Eagle was allowed on a Wallenstein ship without very good reason. If they were caught on board, they would forfeit the hair on their head.

Scarlett raised an eyebrow while watching the messenger from over her mug of coffee. A Wallenstein badge? She wondered if this might be some sort of payback for losing the security contract for the station. That did make them a potential threat to internal security. She was certain the Wallensteins would love to watch their business rival fail in a job they lost to them. But would they murder?

"No, I imagine you won't," he replied to the guard.

"Ms. Administrator, I'm afraid our little talk will have to be cut short." The Marshal took another drink of his coffee, then set the cup down unfinished.

"Mr... what was your name, son?" he asked the guard. "Mr. (insert name of guard here), get the investigating team to meet me at the docking ring. Have them bring the evidence with them. I'll go to the Wallenstein port of entry and speak to their captain myself."

He stood to leave.

"Ms. Administrator, would you be so kind as to send me what port the Rostock is docked at? I'd be much obliged."

"Ah've got it right here." Scarlett replied. Quickly scanned through her older, slightly bulky cortex unit she kept clipped to the belt around her rather slim waist. She already knew where it was just by the size of the vessel, but which gate exactly, that needed double checking.

"Oversized docking link C down at the bottom of the station." She called out. "I'll make sure they can't leave anywhere too quickly."

She stood up as well and grabbed her mug of coffee. This meant she was going to have to do something she dreaded... Go in to the office.

"Much obliged, ma'am," he said as he excused himself from her company. He noted down the location on Mr. McPea so he wouldn't forget it and made his way back towards the elevators. He hated going to the bottom of the station, but just like now, it was sometimes a necessity.

He adjusted his belt and touched his gun, a habit of reassuring it was still in the proper place. The gun was made with a bone grip and mostly there as a fashionable decoration. He hadn't had to draw it to use it in years, although he still kept it in good condition and occasionally used it on the range to verify it was sighted properly.

He wasn't quite sure how Wallenstein would react, but he was pretty certain it wouldn't be with aggressive force. But if he got a buckaroo...

Scarlett was making her way to the lift down to the administrative level when her cortex went off. Apparently there was an altercation in a shop on two that was now growing into a small riot. Shots were reported fired by security forces.

"Gorram fay-fay duh pee-yen!" She exclaimed at the machine. She brushed back the red locks from her face and turned back towards the deck two escalator. Just once she wanted a day where everything went smoothly.

=Damn it Edgar, what the hell is going on up on two?!=

=An alarm was triggered as J&P Apparel. Units responded. Beyond that we have no information.= She knew Edgar was loving her having to run around and deal with situations like this.

=Fine, I'm on my way.=

=I'll alert the wave channels.= The man's voice called back with a sneer that was evident through three decks.

"Bun tyen-shung duh ee-dway-ro!" she cursed as she dropped the cortex back into it's holder at her waist. She mounted the escalator two steps at a time to get up to deck two.

...from Deck 4...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/rlongtin/Phoenix%20Roleplaying/Danny%20Franco/1.jpg

The golf cart came around The Hub in view of the Xīngbakè Coffeehouse where the elderly couple was headed. Danny helped the elderly couple off of the golf cart, "have a nice day," he said as he handed them his business card (OOC: Which I'm now thinking about getting artzy and designing).

Returning to his seat, to kill a little time in case he had more customers, he turned around to Irina and said "this whole floor is decorated with trees from Greenleaf," he gestured around them at the greenery.

Irina got out of the cart as Danny pointed out the trees. She walked slowly, in a trance, to the area that resembled the habitation of St Albans. She looked up at the trees and ran her hands on the bark. Yakov whined from the cart as he had been ordered not to move.

Irina closed her eyes, put her hand against the tree and prayed. She felt a strong spirit from the place a sense the Earth Mother had blessed this place with true life. She looked up at the trees and she realised she had made a mistake. She had cursed this station as an abomination, an insult to her Goddess but this sacred grove amongst the stars was proof positive that Greenleaf was a blessing held strong on the branch of the Great Tree.

She made a sign to Yakov and he bounded towards her. Irina crouched down and smiled at Yakov.
"We have been blessed", Irina said in Russian to her companion.

Danny, slightly confused, called over, "did you still want to go to Deck 6?" He almost felt a tinge of sadness that she might be leaving him so soon. Of course he didn't know why she had gotten off the cart or why she needed to go to Deck 6, or why she had requested a place with trees. Perhaps the dog needed to take a leak and had anxiety problems if there wasn't any natural plant growth? It was a silly thought, plus he didn't know how officials would react if the dog began peeing here...

Irina looked over at Danny with a serene and loving expression. Her strong bounty hunter/recon specialist  and stern uncompromising exterior had faded away to reveil her other true self of St Albans; a Priestess of the Earth Mother.

"Danny Franco of Greenleaf Station. I ask please come pray with us." It was as if Irina had projected her voice as a whisper in Danny's ear.

Danny opened his mouth as if to respond. Then immediately closed it and gesturing to the golf cart. Then immediately opened his mouth again as if to respond and turned his palms up indicating that he didn't know what to do. Then, overcome with a reminder of this imaginary debt he owed her he turned off the golf cart, removing the key, and got off of it. He double-clicked a button on the key which made the lights flash once and the cart gave a high pitched, light beep. (OOC: Alarm system - it also has a remote starter and a button that opens the doors and the trunk...oh wait...  tongue )

He walked over to Irina and crouched beside her, mouth slightly agape as he looked for her lead.

Irina smiled warming and then took Danny's hand. "Ve vill feel prayer for all our past loved ones ve have lost in this world. But us no forget. I never forget. Hold them close to our hearts and let their spirit watch over us."
She bowed her head and whispered an ancient prayer in the old tongue past down to her by her grandmother. The prayer lasted less than a minute when she looked up she saw the fleeting image of her mother looking at her with a concern. The vision of her mother could see into Irina's spirit and knew the possible future for her daughter.

She stood up, gave Danny a thankful smile for being part of the prayer and then she centered herself. Her expression changed and she let go of his hand to tie back her hair.
