Where's the character bios supposed to go? The ident applications or directory for character bios? I don't want to clutter the board up so I'll keep it in ident applications for now until I know.

Good guess. I think Ident Control is for applications, and then approved bios get listed on the Directory.

Kevin 'Zuzutoo' the Sim Leader or Jason the GM will correct me, though, if I'm wrong. :-)

Thanks. I've come to realize I'd like for Alistair to stay a bit more long-term on Greenleaf Skyplex than previously envisioned if that's alright. Because of that I'll be making another character who might be pretty similar, but don't worry about having two clones running around. They won't be, and anyway I simply need another in order to... well, you'll see.

Having played Arkham City and incurred slight brain damage from the Riddler challenges, I wanted to ask you guys if you would mind were I to slightly encrypt the Cortex messages that might pop up in Alistair's posts. For the moment, this is primarily directed to Kevin as it is with him I'm currently interacting, but I thought I should ask more generally as I hopefully will be seeing a bit of you guys too. I wouldn't keep any essential information from you by doing so, but rather exposition or extra information as an added bonus for those of you who like riddles. Plus, I think it would be a fun challenge. I'll give you an example down below:

"20  8  9  19    9  19    1    20  5  19  20    13  19  7."

As this is an example, I'll give you the key used in this case. It's the simplest kind of a letter-number cipher.
Here it is:


A   B      C    D    E    F    G    H    I    J   
1   2      3    4    5    6    7    8    9    10    and so on. The message reads:

"This is a test msg."

If there's any interest for this kind of thing, let me know as I think it could be quite fun to both make and break the riddles. As we progress, I'll include more and more interesting information about the back story and details about my characters and the occasional reward - not entirely unlike DLC I suppose, but always totally optional information that won't have any impact game wise, just fun writing and hopefully fun reading it. I will never lock anyone out of the contents of my post. Regarding rewards, I think an internet cookie will be the first level and we'll progress from there. Personalised titles perhaps? No? 
What are your opinions?

I don't know how other people feel, but having studied cryptography as a graduate level Math student and cracked ciphers as complex as RSA, I'm all for you doing it with simple block ciphers to make it more interesting.  big_smile

...that would probably leave other people at a loss though...so don't listen to me.  tongue

I assumed the general attitude to tea drinking was the central issue, happy to see I wasn't too wrong about that!

I will go ahead with it for now then, if Kevin or Jason doesn't approve I'll simply have to edit it later. I'll start out real nice and easy.

And good grief, Robert, I shall eventually have to make a separate set of puzzles stamped "INTENDED FOR ROBERT USE ONLY". I guess it would be a bit unsporting to use random books as the keys though...

Yes those are called "one-time pads" and are invulnerable to attack unless you use them more than once (going against the "one-time" portion of the name). And yes it would be a bit unsporting since I'm a slow enough reader as it is, let alone have to spend time checking every book I can think of for page #, line #, word # to see if I can find a pattern.  tongue

Well, the first one is up, and if you feel like it I have the alternate version of the second puzzle just for you! I shan't spoil it too much, but it's derivative of the one in my post so if you translate that one first you won't have much trouble with this one. Not that you will anyway. Still, it'll be more of a challenge if you try this one first. Also, I'll insert a hint here spoilered : steganography And another, more explicit in Greek

Having expected a simple shift cipher and getting stonewalled (slang for "blocked") at all attempts at breaking your cipher, your hint was terribly helpful not in the sense of helping me crack the cipher but in the sense of helping me realize you aren't "slightly" encrypting your Cortex messages.  tongue

Whaaat, me? It should be pretty straightforward! I mean, it's obviously Morse code . Knowing this, we see that the first sign is a ! This tells us the sentence is written backwards. Knowing this, it's only a matter of googling the phrase we have extracted. It's written in English in the other thread if you think it's difficult to find, though there are multiple hits on the first page. Easy! big_smile And I'm not that evil... much. Coming up next for your approval - shift ciphers, with a slight twist! Mwa ha ha.

Thanks for changing the Morse code. iotsitark ark was just way too confusing. "To the strongest" makes WAY more sense.

And if you're including punctuation marks in your cipher (something I have never seen in any cipher, not even spaces - thanks for those, they always make it easier!) then you'll have to provide a letter list so that I and others can know how the punctuation marks are ordered.  tongue

Ciphers traditionally never include punctuation marks or spaces of any kind, neither do they include a change in letter case (upper case / lower case).
