Topic: One Year Awards

Just want to call out all those who have been here longer than a year. Some of these may have gone, but unfortunately the userlist doesn't have a column for when they last posted, so I didn't remove them (if anyone is certain some of these players are definitely gone, please let me know and I'll remove them from the list):

Re: One Year Awards

I don't think I qualify for this list. My old account has been around for over a year but it actually hasn't been active since September 2010 and I've only been back since August.

Re: One Year Awards

That's an interesting consideration... If people become inactive do they still accumulate "time". I wonder what others thoughts are in this regard?

Re: One Year Awards

Maybe there should be a condition like posting at least once a month (or maybe shorter, it's just a thought) as well.

Re: One Year Awards

Well, we have talked about "hiding" accounts in the past as part of Phoenix 2.0 if they go inactive after a set period of time. Assuming we can collect and store that data, it may not be that difficult to keep track of it automatically. I definitely wouldn't want to try to keep track of it by hand.

But I'd really like feedback about what people think about accumulating time... if someone joins, is active for a month, then doesn't post for 11 months, then becomes active again, should they be allowed to have the 1 year badge? Anyone know how other clubs with this kind of badge/award handle this?

Re: One Year Awards

I do not know how other clubs handle this, but in the example that you have set above, my answer would be: no, that person should not be allowed to get the 1 year badge. But that would also pose a problem for people on extended LOA, since they have announced they will be absent.

Re: One Year Awards

That's generally the case in other communities, yeah; if someone goes long-term AWOL and later returns, they usually start a new period of membership. There was actually an argument over exactly this issue in AJJE when someone who'd been long-term AWOL came back and expected the rights and privileges (e.g. 'club rank') that they would have attained if they'd been a constant member. To be fair, though, there should be an appeal process for members who fell AWOL under extreme circumstances to be 'forgiven' as it were and for their original registration to be renewed as valid. For example, Mike Miller's return would, in my opinion, be an instance where the member's original registration could be considered valid because of his historic contribution to this community. In most cases, though, it doesn't seem fair for a person to be receiving awards when they're not actually in the community... badges for year-by-year membership are surely supposed to be rewarding commitment?

I'd refer you all to Member Policy 4 of the Member Policy Bill (http://www.phoenix-rp.com/viewtopic.php?id=839) as our baseline guidance for this question (and to the related issue of 'culling' from the list those members who have left, e.g. Mike Palmer. There are others on that list, too, Jason, so it might be best to wait until the Member Policy Bill is ratified and then chivvy Euan along with the cull before you do One Year awards).

Anyway, Member Policy 4 is, simply put, our sitewide AWOL/LOA policy and it also does differentiate between people who announce they're going LOA and those who don't, and also suggests what to do when people say they're going LOA and then never return.

Perhaps I could encourage you all to post your thoughts on the Member Policy Bill itself at http://www.phoenix-rp.com/viewtopic.php?id=839.

Re: One Year Awards

The holidays got me too busy to continue work on the actual badges (the technical part of getting them on the forum). Until that is up and working, no static awards will truly be "given". I wouldn't mind getting the yearly awards done though. Maybe as part of the upcoming vote on these bills as well?

Re: One Year Awards

I've added my Two Year Award to my signature, which other players can do.

Re: One Year Awards

My feeling (speaking as someone who has just returned from a six month sabbatical!) is that a player should accrue time as a member if they are away from the site by arrangement, and that possibly there be some caveat by which they have to have been present and posting for more time than they had been away in that one year, eg membership should be accrued if they are present for at least six/seven/eight months in the year. (Whatever people think is fair).

However, if a player wants to maintain their continuous service they could simply post a 'still here' post once in a while, and so circumvent the ruling even if they are not posting meaningful posts, so for me it's about agreement between sim leaders and players.

I also feel strongly that if a player goes AWOL then their membership should not be counted as continuous for time served purposes.

Re: One Year Awards

Deborah, I agree - you should be able to accrue time while away on LOA, but not on AWOL.

Re: One Year Awards

Same here.

How do I add the two years' service stars to my sig?

Just copy+paste this code into your signature (and be sure to put it on a separate line):

Re: One Year Awards

We could work a similar thing to how the UK determines if you pay tax - presence for more than six months in the year = pay up. So if you're here for more than half the year, well, you were here for the purposes of a year of service.

Re: One Year Awards

I'm good with whatever as long as we don't over-complicate things.  smile

Euan's suggestion sounds fair.

Re: One Year Awards

Yeah, trying to keep track of it is sort of difficult, as the only way we can "track" time is by join date and then post activity. I'll post a new thread about two year awards.

Re: One Year Awards

Also, new One Year Awards coming soon...

Euan, how difficult would it be to add a "last post date" to the user list? That would be immensely helpful for sorting out these things.

Or, at least, an alphabetical list with the last post date. Only way I can see to get that info is to check each profile individually. sad

Re: One Year Awards

Or if it's easier, Euan could probably throw together a quick excel spreadsheet not unlike the one he made me for resolutions and such, just specify a different time interval (for the votes we invite people who have posted in the previous 2 weeks as they are considered "active"). Could just do "1 year" instead of "2 weeks", or however you prefer...

But a "last post date" would be pretty handy on the user list all the same so if that's preferable to you I think it'd be a good one to have.
