Re: Deck 5: The Golden Paradise Casino

OOC: Ah! Great to have you back, anyway. :-)

Alex watched Mina as she extricated herself from talking to him and sought Tomas' permission to escape to her room. He was immediately interested in her. 'Abuse victim?' he wondered. The insecurity and desire to flee certainly spoke volumes about her sense of self.

Alex smiled a little to himself and idly wondered if he would pursue her. His great distraction was and would remain Administrator Wilson, but Mina certainly interested him.

Josie smirked as Dmitri took the pot. She wasn't all that concerned yet - although it was obvious he was not a man to give ground or quarter.  She would take the glass and lift it with a nod to her fellow poker player.

"I usually don't accept a glass from a man before he tells me his name."

The dark man smiled at her. "Dmitiri. Dmitiri Khan. I like to recognize those with gifts when I see them." He raised his glass to her and took a sip. He seemed to equally be soaking in her presence as he was the cocktail. "Will you be with us long this evening?"

OOC: I think post 50/51 and post 52 are looking for a reply from Tomas and Dmitri respectively. I only bump this because I saw Kevin posted in the other threads here and I got jealous. :-P

OOC: I'll post for him, if he doesn't mind, since this is a GM type of interaction. Kevin, let me know if you'd rather these be your own NPCs, rather than just GM driven characters.

Tomas nodded at Mina in acknowledgement of her desire to leave. "Be there in time to start performing at 8," he added before turning his attention back to Alex.

"A pleasure to meet you, Ms. Holliday," Dmitri purred as he peeked at his cards.

"Raise," he said, placing several chips into the pot.

OOC: Sorry folks. I've got a retreat with 20 high schoolers to lead this weekend and then I'm moving on Sunday. Life is a little frazzled this week. I may not have internet for 24 hours between Sunday and Monday. Thanks for the patience.

Re: Deck 5: The Golden Paradise Casino

OOC: Wow, right you are, Kevin. I hope the retreat is profound, etc., and that the move goes well. :-) Blessings on your new home, brother, in Christ Jesus.

"What do we know about our high roller?" he asked, watching the pits as he spoke.

Mina exited quickly nodding to both men before leaving she didn't like the way Alex looked at her.  She couldn't put her finger on why but just something about him screamed for her to go away.  Besides she needed to find some new clothes she figured on trying that place that Scarlett mentioned.

Josie would smile. He was going to be hard to out maneuver.  "Raise." She would say putting some chips into the pile as well. Her strategy was simple - keep everyone betting, take the large pot from Dmitri.

OOC: Good point. I more than admit I'm not sure what I'm getting into GMing a poker game, so my bad for being slow to answer.

IC: Dmitiri didn't flinch but added the raise amount to the pot with a slight smile on his face. He could play this game for a while.

Meanwhile Tomas looked back to Alex. "Dmitiri Khan, imports and exports. He represents a substantial shipping empire among the border worlds. I understand he is looking to expand their business to Greenleaf. He likes to burn through the credits, and I like to keep him happy."

One of the many things Alex and Tomas differed on. If this Khan had been a regular at Phantasm rather than the Golden Paradise, Alex would have seen him as more than a punter. If Khan was spending his employers' credits, they wouldn't likely thank Tomas for it at the end of the day.

"Do you know who?" he asked, still watching the game. "The company?"

Re: Deck 5: The Golden Paradise Casino

The following wave arrived in Tomas Blaine's inbox.

=Dear sir or madam, my name is Daniel Franco. I'm the owner of Speedy Transportation Services, a new business here on Greenleaf. In my efforts to better establish myself, I'd like to let you know about my services and if it interests you I'd like to take a moment to discuss with you a possible arrangement that might be mutually beneficial.

As you well know, getting clients in the door is the first big step. With Speedy Transportation Services, now it's even easier. With cash in hand, clients are ready to pay to get from point A to point B all over the station - why not make point B your business?

Imagine a client is done for the day and begins walking around the station looking for something to do. Moments later Speedy Transportation Services comes by offering an express service to your business AND at a discounted price.

The first step is exclusive advertising space along with a promotion - discount express transportation to your business.

I'd really love to tell you more, but I'd prefer to meet with you in person to discuss this great offer with you. If you're interested, please send me a wave with a time when I can meet with you personally.

"Oh," he added, holding up one of his hands as he reached for his slender cortex unit which was slipped in the pocket of his tight trousers, "excuse me." He'd received a text wave.

OOC: By all meands Jason, Jump in. I think Tomas is actually one of Jason W's NPCs, but I was trying to get Mina some more to do. I will email you as to what I want to happen with the Poker game and party. I'm a bit lost on Poker specifically. Sorry Amanda.

IC: Tomas reached for his cortex as the advertisement came through. He raised an eyebrow. It certainly wouldn't hurt ot have the Casino on the transport's route. He would have to send Mr. Franco a wave.

Re: Deck 5: The Golden Paradise Casino

- Quentin Doulos-

When the message came, Quentin was standing at the Roulette table with his arm around what, in mediocre lighting and a few drinks later, might have been described as a beautiful woman. Quentin had had more than a few drinks. The day had been long and frustrating, filled with boring paperwork and even more boring accountants who he had had to entertain most lavishly for some hints about the station's state of finances.
He had only succeeded in becoming terrifically drunk and though he was not sure how or when he had gotten to the casino, he had an inkling more money than he owned had streamed through his fingers there. Not that it mattered - the sum would be taken out of Home Office's Inquisition Budget, as they always referred to it, and would probably not even be missed from that immense ocean of money. All things considered, he was feeling quite content with life.
That is, until the message arrived.
It was a message from his employer, and that was enough for him to feel a first pang of alarm. Reading the message elevated his alarm to panic, and he could feel the color draining from his face as he turned and left the table without a word, and the woman with it.

=11:43=

Lazarus, come forth. So, it's starting at last. Why now, you old fox? Why would you make a move now of all times? I wonder...
But he knew his orders, and nowhere among them were included permission to wonder. So he did as he had been told, writing the four messages he had painstakingly memorised and reread so many times before, trying to get some sense out of them but to no avail.
The first one was sent to a Cortex on Osiris. He did not know what it was for, nor did he care.
That message read:
=Lramzorh tjhkcarp Laisc Rrw Lzl Clkzm Ewlh= (OOC: By popular demand from Robert! Vigenere, yay! The capitalizations are not part of the code, but shows how the plaintext should be capitalized. The key is 7 letters. If you spot the secret message I'll tell you what it means!)

The second was addressed to a Cortex on the station itself.
It read simply:
=A nice day for a cup of tea perhaps?=

The third was a forwarded message addressed to someone on Londinium and was a cute picture of a kitten hanging in a tree, with a caption saying "Hang in there!"

The fourth message was an old insurance advertisement, this time sent to Sinhon.

His work done, his good mood irrevocably ruined, he turned to walk out of the Casino for some air.
He did not know what the messages meant, but he could take a guess as well as anyone. Considering the source, nothing good.
And now off to wait, faithful little dog, for your master. That bloody bureaucrat! And it was such a nice evening too...
He started for Deck 5, as had been agreed upon.
He already knew how the rest of the night would go: he would go to the Phantasm, sit down at a lonely table, wait way too long for anyone to show up, play with the idea to jump ship as he did every night, and in the end do as he was told yet again.
He knew better than most what would be the consequences if he did not, after all.
Alistair had never been known for mercy.

-> Continued in Phantasm - Deck 5

The poker game continued on. in a move that seemed to get Dmitiri's attention the hand went to Josie. The bowler had man seemed doubly angry. the Chinese woman played calmly giving no sign of any emotion. Tomas smiled from the side as Josie pulled a sizeable sum of credits in.

The datapad in his pocket buzzed with a wave.

From the office in the bar, Ginger had sent both him and Kris a message that read:

Alex was about to text back that Ginger should contact Kris saying he'd said Kris should do it, but he remembered she was getting her nails done and wouldn't forgive the interruption.

"Ah, a pity," he commented to Tomas. "I'm needed back at my place."

=On my way,= he waved Ginger, CCing Kris, while he spoke.

He gave one last look in the direction of the poker tables. "Looks like it's really shaping up to be a good game," he commented, "almost as good as a mediocre game of Tall Card."

He smiled. He liked trying to annoy the Casino owner.
