Topic: Linked sigs

I find myself periodically having to go back and look at character bios (not usually my own, but occasionally). Since many threads have images of the characters in them, I thought about how it would make it so much easier to include a link with the image, like so:

http://i42.tinypic.com/2vulmw7.jpg
"Now, that is D'ni," he commented, noting the style of the lantern in its simplistic brilliance. "In fact, that's the most D'ni thing I've seen so far." Te'mas touched the valve leading up to the lamp. "Ingenious. A large pocket of natural gas can keep these lanterns glowing for centuries."

---

The code for the image is:

If everyone did this, it would make it so much easier to reference back to people's char bios to look something up! Just saying..

Oh, and for those that have their images in their sigs, that would work too. wink

Re: Linked sigs

VERY nice suggestion! Parallel's how I made the clickable image of the book to D'ni in the D'ni proposal way back when!

Unfortunately signatures have a maximum character length which includes the code used to create those links. So for those who have 5 character images in their signatures, I'm pretty sure they've maxed out their signatures and can't create these url links.

Nice suggestion about putting images of your characters in the signatures.

An easy way around this - if you only want to add the pictures to your sig - is to make one wider picture of your different characters. So basically stick them together into one picture.

Re: Linked sigs

Yes, but then Jason's suggestion is moot for linking individual pictures. You could put in one link for the one big picture and that would be it.

Re: Linked sigs

Jason, any chance you can email me how you code that? It displays funny on my phone and I can't read it (in post #1 above).

This is an excellent idea, and one I'll be implementing for my characters.

I will work on this as well. Something to do during the holidays. smile

Try this, Ash (without the spaces):
[ url=(link to post)][ img](link to image)[ /img][ /url]

That's ace, dude. I'll get this knocked out across the boards for my characters asap.

Re: Linked sigs

Cool, I've edited the most recent post from each of my characters to link to the bio. From now on, I'll use the linked image with IC posts.

Re: Linked sigs

Can I suggest this thread be added to the club notice underneath "How to post a picture"? Perhaps as "How to post a link to your bio in your picture".

Ash

Re: Linked sigs

Or "How to link a bio to the character image". Since there's a difference between the char bio and "your" bio. wink

I can do that.

Sounds like a good name for the link, and I'm sure it can wait a while to be uploaded.

Re: Linked sigs

I just had a thought that might take care of every one of our problems (edit: regarding character images, names, etc. in the signature).

Euan, how difficult would it be to create a "biography" field for each user in the profile section (visible to others when they visit the user's profile) with no character limit or something really big like 25,000 characters?

I'm thinking what we could do is, while people want to put their character images in the signature and so forth, it crossed my mind that character images along with their names and stuff could be entered into a profile for each user in which we can keep each character image and associated name and other information organized for quick-reference?

Obviously allowing for profile biographies, not everyone will use it in this fashion but that's at their discretion (not everyone puts their character images in their signatures either), but maybe we can set a precedent and it'll catch on?

Contrariwise, maybe we could also create a forum exclusively for member profiles where they can create a thread for themselves and organize things however they like there (though I think making the bio in the profile would be much more efficient and less prone to problems).

Re: Linked sigs

I'd suggest the members profile thing might be the better route - to have a biography on the profile would involve configuring that in the database, and a 25000 character field would be quite large. However, if people would rather that, it would be possible.

Re: Linked sigs

Well I don't know how many characters people would use but the signature one seems rather small for linking things like pictures and so forth. And to the 25,000, it was just a number I was throwing out there but realistically maybe something like 2500 is more appropriate?

Re: Linked sigs

What would be REALLY nice would a way to get custom signatures depending on where you were posting. So if I post in the "Cydonia" sim, I'd have a Cydonia specific signature. Whereas posting in the Umbra sim would give me an Umbra signature.

Could tie in with the idea I had elsewhere about "registering" for sims in order to post on them. Something to add to P2.0, maybe Euan?

Re: Linked sigs

That sounds not wholly unlike the old country where when you went into a specific sim you could only choose from your characters that you had in that sim to post as...assuming we're talking about using signatures for storing character info.

Re: Linked sigs

Sounds like a good idea to me, Jason. Even having a "post as X" box on the message, where you can post as any one of your characters or OOCly, and have a sig attached to each, might be an idea.
