Topic: ------SEPARATION POST/TIMELINE CUT------

On the Triple Zero, Aidan's employed what actually seems to be to be an essential means of differentiating between two scenes taking place in the same location with time between them.

So as an example:

Character A and Character B are talking in a thread called Location 1. After a while, they walk out and continue their conversation in a thread called Location 2.

Somewhat later, Character B and Character C walk into Location 1 and have an argument. When reading the thread, it's hard to know that time much elapsed between when Character B was talking to Character A and when Character B was arguing with Character C.

Aidan punctuated things on the Triple Zero by posting
------SEPARATION POST/TIMELINE CUT------
at the end of Character A and Character B's dialogue in Location 1.

I thought I'd suggest that here for others to use, or something similar. I'd been aware of the problem, but so inspired and sound a solution hadn't occurred to me! :-)

Re: ------SEPARATION POST/TIMELINE CUT------

My guess is there was a spam post in Russian between mine and Aidan's which a moderator has helpfully deleted?

Can I ask moderators to just 'snip' the text and links from spam posts and write in their place 'SPAM POST DELETED' or the like but leave the post itself. If we delete the whole post, it makes the rest of the thread a bit confusing. Unless Aidan was saying my post wasn't easy to read and Kevin suddenly had a bout of anti-Russian sentiment...

Or we could delete Kevin's post about Russians along with the spam since I believe Kevin's post might count against some sort of maximum usage that Euan has to deal with as far as keeping the site up.

...unless Kevin really wants to make a statement against Russians here?  tongue

Re: ------SEPARATION POST/TIMELINE CUT------

Nyet! I merely can't remember how to say Spam in Russian to match the post.

Not responding to spam is the solution.

Re: ------SEPARATION POST/TIMELINE CUT------

Ah yes. And then when our boards are sort of 88% spam, 12% actual RP we'll all get together and buy you a big cake to say thank you for that suggestion. :-P

Maybe it's the archivist in me, but I don't want to delete member posts, even if they're simply reactions to spam. Plus I think in terms of maximum usage, we're a-okay, we don't need to worry about that.

Re: ------SEPARATION POST/TIMELINE CUT------

DO have a response to spam, I meant, don't REPLY to spam.

And there really is no reason to keep spam around or replies to it. They serve little purpose other than to annoy and/or confuse. If you want to keep a total of spam posted, have a "Spam total posted" topic and update it with a tick mark every time a spam is deleted. wink

My revised position on this is that spam and any replies to it are clutter. I know that's a u-turn on my previous position (and my previous position meant a lot of work for Silent during the last bout of spam he dealt with), but in the final analysis it does look bad both for active members and prospective members if we're wading in spam posts.

However, as I've mentioned elsewhere, we're going to be implementing new measures whereby all new applicants are security checked by anti-spam software upon registration, on their first post, and on a random post in their first 10 after that. I'd like to review what is needed in response to any spam situation after we've let that software do its work for a few weeks. It may be that no further spam gets through and we won't need to worry about responding to it because we'll have already stopped it before it starts. That's my hope, anyway.
