Player of the Year

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

This topic is open to nominations!

Please just list your nominations in the order you wish and post. The topic will be open indefinitely until a concise verdict can be reached, but don't hesitate to add yours as soon as possible.

This isn't something to keep quiet about, especially if you think someone deserves it. Your vote counts! Make it known!

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

We tried nominations in the voting booth previously; it was for anonymity in nominations - not opposed to doing that here, though it's up to everyone else. Anonymity is the only thing the voting booth does differently with regards to nominations.

What do you reckon, Jason? Public nominations by post here in this thread, or private? Private ones could also be by email or PM to you as Awards Coordinator, perhaps?

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

I have a question about the Player of the Year Award: are we actually talking about a person contributing as a player here? What I mean by that is: should we nominate a person for this based on the contribution he/she makes with his/her characters?

If so, then I would like to propose an adiitional award: the Member of the Year. Many people here contribute to the forums beside playing in sims by coordinating different things/sites/etc. I think there should be an award for that as well. So this award would be one encompassing all work a member does for these forums, including coordination work, promotional work, but also as a player.

I'm wondering how other people feel about such an award.

Personally, I feel that would be covered by Player of the Year.

If that is the case, then I would plead for a 'Character of the Year' award as well. Because if a Player of the Year Award encompasses all that I have mentioned before, the GM of the Year Award seems a bit out of place (since that would be part of the Player of the Year Award as well). So then it would make sense to have a Character of the Year Award as well.

Looking to bag an award yourself? smile

I always stress caution in regards to rewards of this nature, people put an inordinate amount of faith in these easily distributed ego-boosts. When not receiving one, people get antsy about why they couldn't have met these standards. Also, as not every member is apart of every SIM, it's hard to say how people gauge a player's abilities.

I, personally, would leave it simple and light. They're just for fun!

As with every award ceremony, it's 80% social, 20% deliberation.

In my mind, everyone wins a 'glad to SIM with you' award.

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

I share Mischa's sympathies though. I'm not concerned as much as I am baffled at how to weigh simming versus other aspects of the site. Maybe other people won't have such difficulties, but for me it makes the choice very tough because it's comparing apples to oranges as I see it.

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

Remember again, that if you put a lot of effort into helping the site, when someone else gets the award it becomes a let down. Maybe everyone who've helped the site by tech/management/networking should get an 'Outstanding Service' award?

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

OK, may I suggest two awards - one for RPing and one for other services?

Also, I'm actually going to nominate some people:

Sim of the Year: Atlantis
Sim Leader of the Year: Kevin Diamond
GM of the Year: Paul Baker

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

Good nominations. I'm feeling I'd like us to come to a conclusion on the 'Player of the Year' definition before I nominate, though.

Player of the Year could refer to how a member actually played, like Mischa suggests, with Member of the Year referring to how a member engaged with and contributed to the community. They are two very different criteria, like comparing apples and oranges as Robert said.

Finally, I want to note, as I think you all know, I agree with Aidan in being profoundly cautious around the idea of Awards in general. But Jason has worked hard to bring together all the thoughts and comments people have posted since the topic first came up in Management on the 20th of December 2010, so I'm confident that the awards system we'll have will be the best and most reflective of all our preferences.

As for an 'Outstanding Service' award, if these were handed out as sort of 'runner's up' prizes to soften the blow to a person of not winning Member of the Year (e.g.), they would soon lose value. Jason and me have been discussing the idea of a GC issued award, one per term of office, intended to recognise outstanding service to the site and community. I don't know how we'd soften the blow of not winning prestigious awards like this or one of the 'x of the Year' awards, though... possibly by having due kudos given for being nominated in the first place, and by having the awards announcer praise each nominee for some specific contribution, to make sure everyone feels duly recognised and valued? That's our goal, really, isn't it, to recognise achievement and contribution? Other than the social value of the ceremony which Aidan is right to identify (that's my personal favourite part!)...

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

One sure way to "soften the blow" is to not make it "[something] of the Year" but to make it or add on to the annual award "[something] of the Month". The greater frequency by which an award is given causes two things - firstly, it diminishes the value of the award, but in so doing also makes the award more achievable since there is a higher frequency, meaning there is an increased chance of being recognized.

Outstanding Service awards could be issued monthly or quarterly, perhaps being summarized at the end of the year to recognize one individual of the group of recipients who outperformed the rest, or leave out the annual summary and Outstanding Service Award for the year and just make it a monthly recognition.

These are just some ideas that come to mind...

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

Not to be reflecting all things back to the world of movies and marketing, but like the major academy awards, being nominated is a big accolade that instantly gets you expanded DVD markets. A small pip that shows a member was nominated would be appreciated since very good players and sims just don't get the big awards.

And yes, I like awards. I like a fun level of competition that goes into getting them. I like them to mean something. I like to sit online at the awards ceremony and say "Damn you Prinz Eugen, we'll get you next year!"

I also like the idea of a "Best New Sim". I mean how many times can the Prinz/Atlantis win?! (Big Joke, as Pilot of the Atlantis I want it to win this year). But I do think some recognition to the innovation of Phoenix versus our legacy sims would be nice. I know its a bit late, with nominations going up and all, to ask for a new category, but while we are making up our minds, on player/member of the year, I might as well bring it up.

I like two awards for member and player. I do not think they are inclusive. I can think of very different but worthy nominees for each.  More awards works better for member morale anyways.

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

Many very good points have been made. I agree with Aidan that there is a risk that people might put too great a value into these awards. On the other hand, deminishing them to almost nothing does defeat the point of having them in the first place.

And like Robert and Ash said: the big difference between a Member of the Year and a Player and GM of the Year is that the first award is more encompassing, whereas the other two extend only to gameplay. So whether the Member of the Year Award - should we implement it - should only be about activities which aren't directly related to gameplay, or about everything a player contributes to our cosy community is a good question.

And I very much like Kevin's idea about nominations: they are indeed a reward in itself.

But again, like Aidan said, we should be careful not to make this thing too much about competing with one another.

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

Indeed.

Jason, can I request we have pips for nominees - essentially recognition in itself - and add a Member of the Month and Member of the Year category to our system. If we have regular monthly awards (we did in the old country) it keeps morale up by giving everyone a greater chance at recognition like Robert says, while retaining the annual awards as well adds a certain gravity to those 'x of the Year' awards.

Kevin, I loved your post, it made me smile (having done exactly the same thing re the Prinz myself, ever since I stepped down from GMing it!), but as for a New Sim of the Year award, my reservation would be that a sim released in February and a sim released in November would both qualify, but be on a very uneven playing field for assesment...

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

I see the point, but excellence and innovation have a way of sticking up whatever the playing field. Granted some late in the year could get penalized the following year being no longer new. However I think giving a chance to our non-legacy sims would be fun even if imperfect.

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

Yay, um... right then. I also think Jason should get a 'where the hell is everyone?' award for Mass Effect.

In any case I guess I'm going to go lurk the SIMs to put some substance in my votes.

Re: Nominations open for 2011 awards

Here is how I see it:

Player of the Year goes to the person who was the best roleplayer, ie had the best character, the best moment, etc etc.

Remember that a SL can give a sim level award at any time. These "of the year" awards are meant to recognize those who consistently show excellence in their category.

For contributions to the site itself, that is what the GC award is for - the GC can give a special recognition award to anyone for their site contributions. Feel free to suggest people for the GC award to either myself or Ash (or both of us). While it is the GC that makes the final choice on such an award, that does not mean you can't suggest someone for one.

New Sim award was dropped because of the logistics that Ash mentioned. It is possible we can add this award if the membership agrees on a time - perhaps any sim created prior to October (3 months should be enough to gauge its worth?)

Aidan, would you mind posting something on the top of the page stating that this thread is open to hopefully get some more nominations to come in?

Silent, would you mind blogging something about this as well?

Thanks!

Witty banter and dessert promises never hurt. smile

Thanks both for doing that, hopefully we'll get some traction here. I'd post some nominations myself, but don't want to appear biased towards any particular sim. I hear the Odyssey has a great GM, though. tongue

Here's a recap of what (little) nominations we have so far:

Player of the Year

  • NO NOMINATIONS

Sim of the Year

  • Atlantis

Sim Leader/ASL of the Year

  • Kevin Diamond

GM of the Year

  • Paul Baker

As of now there are three run away victories... wink
