Re: OOC Discussion

Silent - if you were going to continue the old plot from ajje, the last thing going on was that the intrepid members were heading to cambridge via the station. They had read in the local paper - the star, that the ripper had struck again. Also a cabriolet was following the members - by a person or persons unknown.

We're not; that was six years earlier in game time. I've got something just as thrilling though and it's going up now...

Re: OOC Discussion

Just noted the main thread for this has been closed ... I'm assuming it's an accident!  Silent - could you please open this up again?  Or, if it has genuinely been closed for a reason, can you tell us what's happened?

Thanks

Re: OOC Discussion

I'm currently reading Christopher Andrew's The Defence of the Realm: The Authorized History of MI5. Professor Andrew was given unique access to the records of the Security Service to write an independent history of MI5 from its creation in last 1909 to 2009. It's a weighty and expensive tome (it will set you back at least £15 and that's half price on Amazon.co.uk), but a fascinating one.

The first bit covers the "spy mania" that swept the United Kingdom in the years before the First World War. Many popular novels covered German espionage against UK and lurid stories appeared in the press. In reality, while it occurred, it was rather small scale.

However, many of the writers and indeed many foreign states assumed that Britain had a high-quality Secret Service, based on memories of Sir Francis Walsingham's activities under Queen Elizabeth I. In reality, it did not have a proper functional service until the Secret Service Bureau was created in 1909 and that was rather underfunded for much of the first half of the 20th century. That Bureau eventually split to form the organisations we know now as MI5 and SIS.

Re: OOC Discussion

Ah, good fellows. We seem to have reopened. Let the management take a few days to get the club up to working order again and we can get down to business.
