Topic: Firefly introductory sim

If we're going to do introductory sims (this is still an if), what would people want to do as a sim in this area?

Re: Firefly introductory sim

My feeling would be a planet is the best bet, or possibly a space station, though a planet could capture the popular 'western' feel more effectively. It was my original hope for Deborah's sim Cydonia to fulfill this function, and it's likely her availability will return to pre-pregnancy prolificness in the very near future. The sim's already got a cadre of experienced players who would make an excellent welcome committee for new applicants. Other mentors would be most welcome, I'm sure.

However, Cydonia is perhaps too sleepy a backwater (it's something like 12 hours travel from the nearest spaceport) on a backwater world (Deadwood). It may be that a larger settlement would serve our purpose better?

Re: Firefly introductory sim

I would agree; personally my preference is for a space station, but that's just me.

We're going to need a spaceport as is; for new sims to recruit people. I was also planning on opening a recruitment office for Maczarek Security there.

Re: Firefly introductory sim

...I agree with both of your points, although Silent you raise an interesting topic. Opening a recruitment office for Maczarek Security... Perhaps it SHOULD be a space station not unlike the one from the episode The Message, where people can find any and every service imaginable, something like an oversized Mall with space for Federal offices and space for rent, along with the standard chain stores and a food court and such.

The benefit of making it a space station is the idea that, going along with the oversized Mall, newcomers can get a preview of every flavor of roleplaying (sort of like window shopping, except in this case literally window shopping as the characters pass stores, offices, etc.).

One of the main attractions should be the mall's exclusive transportation service, which features one-way travel to all core planets (unavoidable, by design) and most of the border planets. And ships can still show up and pick up new crew members too, some public display of this information before the ship docks would be desirable too. This way we can enable players to quickly get to where they'd like to go and there's no obligation to stay on the space station - but for those that stay, there will be plot - sounds like a Daniel Day Lewis movie.  big_smile

We could keep the plot light (as opposed to thick) since we can't expect to keep people there forever - we want newcomers to be able to experience a taste of the plot as opposed to a three-course meal of plot, too much of something they might not want (just that particular plot) might drive them away, and none at all could have the same affect. So light plot while still making it interesting. I'd be happy to GM such a sim...?

Re: Firefly introductory sim

Nice idea Robert. My dockmaster back on Akers Scarlett Newman Wilson, hailed from Greenleaf Skyplex a big crowded mall in space importing neccesities from the inner planets out to the rim. In my backstory it was a major distribution and collection hub for that region of space. The big Blue Sun Mega Haulers would offload cargo for little freighters to take out to the rim planets. By the same token they could collect whatever meager goods all the rim folk could grow or manufacture and bring em back to the Core. It had an alliance presence to protect commerce, but they weren't the most motivated folks to be out on the far end of the Verse. Basically a microcosm of the whole Verse. I'm willing to bring Scarlett back if we want to set it up.

Indeed, my thoughts exactly Kevin - and I like that you already have a location in mind, we could use the "Greenleaf Skyplex" since that seems to parallel my exact thoughts for this also.  big_smile

Re: Firefly introductory sim

Interesting this is very similar to what I posted in the main thread discussing intro sims, although the idea is to have a single sim for the entire site, where stormtroopers and Klingons mingle with hobbits and time lords. smile

Re: Firefly introductory sim

My suggestion in that thread is that we keep the site-wide point of entry an OOC area. Speaking for myself alone here, I'd find the idea of Klingons mingling with Hobbits abominable, except at a convention!

If we were to have a Firefly themed point of entry as well (perhaps a recommended next stop after the site-wide OOC welcome area) from which characters could make their way to other sims, I think Greenleaf Skyplex actually works beautifully. The sim I ran on the Prinz Eugen took place largely on Dandelion Station, a similar concept, which worked well and for which the concept can be found here:

and here:

Are we thinking something like this, except maybe larger?

Re: Firefly introductory sim

Yes, that's I'm thinking at any rate. Considerably larger.

I'm imagining a facility like Greenleaf Skyplex would be around the size of Lakeside (a large shopping mall near where I live with 300 shops and 13,000 parking spaces, plus a large retail park thrown in for good measure). You might have large mooring facilities just outside and walkways into the main joint.

The Alliance would have a presence there, but it might be a good idea to have security run by a private firm for handling the day-to-day stuff (like shoplifters). Not necessarily Maczarek, but maybe one of the other "big four" that I've created for the Kvant setting, possibly Wallenstein.

Re: Firefly introductory sim

^^^ My thoughts exactly Silent! I'd also like it to have a maze-like space too, where the smaller and possibly less scrupulous businesses might have a front. While not impossible to expose the less-than-lawful businesses, it could be made more difficult through personal security measures such businessmen might take themselves. Anyhow, it will definitely be fun!

I might draw up my own specs for the Greenleaf Skyplex (unless you'd like to take on the task, Kevin?) and hopefully I'll be able to create some vulpine maps for you all to look over!

Oh, I'm looking forward to seeing maps, whoever comes up with them! :-) This is really exciting!
