Re: Firefly theodicy

Hmm, nice attempt, but the person who wrote it is
1) Mistaken about a few things in terms of who did what to whom, which doesn't help his arguments
and
2) Overlaying weak arguments over very specific events to try to come to a broader conclusion that doesn't truly exist.

For that 2nd part, particularly prudent is the section about trying to compare the line about the "lion" to some piece of scripture. I'm sure there are many lines in a variety of TV series/movies you could make tenuous connections to with lines in the Bible, but that doesn't mean they were added in for that particular reason.

Is some of what he says about the presence of evil in the series/film valid? Sure. Most stories are more interesting with a clear cut antagonist, and thus an "evil" presence. Trying to map that to some theological argument is absurd - it's standard writing practice.

Seems to be a classic case of trying to find something that isn't there.

Re: Firefly theodicy

Right. I hadn't read it but my initial reaction when I glanced at the page was this: it would be wise to FIRST observe that Joss Whedon is an atheist. I'll repeat: Joss Whedon is an atheist. Can you relate things from Firefly/Serenity that aren't explicit Bible references to the Bible? Sure. But this is making some assumptions about the main proponent behind the story which is Joss who is not Christian.

Missing the boat on Joss Whedon's religious affiliation (or rather lack of religious affiliation) put me off of actually giving it a read since that pretty much demolished all notion of an objective argument for me. I might still look through it, but the basis of the arguments made are definitely flawed on that one premise.

Re: Firefly theodicy

Haters. :-P The theologian says in the opening words "The reader should be aware that Joss Whedon, in interviews, rejects any notion of a 'sky bully'" and that the article is the beginning of his (the writer's, not Joss') "theological interpretation of the series + the movie". I don't think for a moment he's arguing that Joss is a Christian apologist and that Firefly is deliberately full of Christian allegory like C.S.Lewis' Narnia is - instead he's 'reading' Firefly theologically, reflecting on the presence of evil in the 'verse alongisde theodicy (Christian theology around the problem of evil), and vice versa. He does employ caveats like "in my interpretation"; I see him as interpretting a programme through the lens of his theology, not writing his theology onto the programme.

Ah fair enough, as mentioned I hadn't read it but I searched the article for a few words and found none. "Sky bully" wasn't something I thought to search for.  wink

In this other light though, I suppose then it's not trying to make inferences but to point it out and be like "hey, doesn't that sound like...?" I have enough of that going on in my head everything I watch movies or tv shows and don't mind when people in the room point out things like that but I think they usually know what things interest me. Drawing relations between Biblical references and TV shows isn't my cup of tea, unless I'm critiquing the show for originality, but then I wouldn't like the show either.

All the same, glad you're enjoying it, I'm betting you've drawn some comparisons yourself, no?

I'll admit, maybe it's the agnostic in me that biases me against any type of theological discussion. I shall leave what I said as is so I don't wind up insulting those here I consider friends. smile
