Re: Sign-Up and Profile Thread

She could be an auxiliary hired on for the contract.

Re: Sign-Up and Profile Thread

That works.

Why did Suzy fall out of the swing?  Because she had no arms.

I'll be bringing a character here soon too with Silent's approval. Working through the concept by email now. :-)

Re: Sign-Up and Profile Thread

Here's my bio for your new Captain... ;-)

Levy Zigler

Family:

Levy was born in the heavily industrialised Brighton Beach area of New Hamilton, Beaumonde, in 2468 to a Yiddish-speaking family. His parents were economic immigrants; his mother Basha (nee Blume) worked in the cloth industry and his father Jules' day job was at a plant, manufacturing mules. Jules also did dirty jobs for a local organised crime syndicate associated with the Ysveks, intimidating, blackmailing, and roughing up opponents and maybe even committing murder. Jules spent some time in prison for his crimes; this was an early source of tension between Levy and his father, Levy resenting Jules for not being the idol of a dad Levy pedestalised, Jules feeling he had no choice and was doing the best for his family.

Jules' father (ie Levy's paternal grandfather) lived with them during Levy's childhood and endured to be very old, but went quite mad over the last 20 or more years of his life.

Basha died of natural causes in 2498 when Levy was 30. Jules is alive, and although there remains conflict between he and his children, they are on at least speaking terms.

Levy had an older brother David who killed himself when he discovered he was terminally ill early in 2506, and two older sisters, as well as nieces and nephews. His sisters took him to political rallies and protest actions in the 2470s and early 2480s.

Levy is angry at his brother who he says "could have had years. But he just dropped everything and walked away." Levy seems to have experienced David's suicide as a betrayal, and has sometimes projected his resentment for this on to others besides his brother, for example the Independent faction in the war, who he accuses of prematurely abandoning the shared purpose and mutually beneficial objectives of the all the planets working together for the common good.

Levy's wife Molly (nee Huck) and he were married in 2499. They had a daughter called Andrea in 2502, but both Molly and Andrea died in an accident in the New Year's celebrations at the end of 2511/beginning of 2512. Nearly 8 years on, Levy still wears his wedding ring.

Levy had chemistry with Tabitha Dern, a spokesperson and activist MacZarek Security were escorting a couple of years ago, but nothing has yet come of it due to their ideological differences (she's a pacifist) and busy careers. They are, however, still in correspondence.

Education, and career:

Alongside Jewish Yeshiva school, from 2471 to '77 he went to St. Patrick Roman Catholic Primary School, then Westdale Secondary School til '82, City College til '85, and MacMasters University to study Law til he graduated in '88. In his final year he was vice-president of the MacMasters Students' Guild, where he met the Chief Justice of the Anglo-Sino Alliance in late 2487.

Levy served in the Alliance Navy as a junior officer from 2488 to 2493, then began work for the estate department of a maglev company, becoming an executive member of the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association in 2496. From 2496 to 2506, Levy worked for various political campaigns in a policy capacity, advising on the campaigns' message and the legality of policy decisions, although in ten years he never worked for a winning candidate. With the outbreak of the U-War in 2506, he joined up as an officer and served in the Alliance Navy once more, til shortly after the war's end in 2511. It was during the war that he met Anna MacZarek, and has been with MacZarek Security since soon after its beginning, personally recruiting several of its other senior figures from his circles both as a lawyer, in politics, and the military.

Personality:

Levy comes across as rather morose. Yet he is something of an idealist, less willing than some of his colleagues to compromise on his values, and has fearlessly clashed even with Anna Maczarek on differences of opinion. He has proven to be a more than formidable opponent in a fight, with words or weapons, easily able to hold his own. He is known for his acerbic wit.

He sometimes attends Synagogue. He is a fan of baseball (claiming to have attended 341 games at his home team's stadium since he was a boy) and, to a lesser extent, basketball.

When thinking, planning, writing, etc., he can be seen throwing and catching a baseball or stickball. His diet is heavy on red meats.

Re: Sign-Up and Profile Thread

It's a bit of a mash up between real world politician Stan Cohen, the West Wing's Toby Ziegler, and the actor Richard Schiff who played him. To visualise him, picture Toby Ziegler. In Maczarek uniform. Armed.

I'm actually scared by that prospect.

For those of you not clear on what the security uniforms roughly look like...

Maczarek
Wallenstein
Brent Cross varies from regiment to regiment, but a common version is this

Background
Personality: Wes is a quiet man and not a natural socializer.  He is keenly aware of all that transpires around him, and his attention to detail, combined with a nose for trouble, have marked him by his men as a lucky commander.  He always demands the very best from himself and those under his command, and has a low tolerance for incompetence.  His uncanny ability to accurately and quickly run complex mathematical equations and computations in his head have resulted in top ratings in astrogation, which helped earn him a place as a junior bridge officer.  The loss of his family during the U War has left him with a bitter prejudice for Alliance forces, but he has learned to control his feelings in this matter in order to stay employed.  He is practical and precise, with a reputation for honesty and a strong sense of personal honor.  Captain DeGarmo maintains his gear and appearance in a precise and orderly manner.  He does enjoy an occasional game of chess, and has a weakness for fine cigars and sour mash whiskey.

Personal History
Wes DeGarmo was born on Verbena, where his family owned and operated a large plantation.  His father served as a citizen legislator for their district, thus giving the family some prestige on Verbena.  Wes grew up and attended the local college to earn a degree in botany and biology, as he planned to help run the family plantation.  He had a devotion to the land and was a natural born survivalist in the wild.  As a loyal citizen on Verbena, he signed up for the Verbena Planetary Guard and soon earned his commission.  The Guard proved to be good for Wes, and he excelled in military studies and command.  He gained expertise in covert operations, melee and unarmed combat, survival, demolitions and tactics, with a special knack for machine guns.  The latter earned him an instructor’s slot at the local Guard training facility., and his combined skills eventually led to a position with the planetary special combat team.

When the Unification War began, and his planet was occupied by the Alliance, Wes became commander of the Verbena special combat team and led them on a four year campaign of guerrilla warfare against the Alliance occupation forces.  His entire family was executed by the Alliance as part of a reprisal for the effective guerrilla operations, and their family planation burned to the ground.  Never the less, Wes continued his operations until the surrender of the Independents in 2511.  During the War he earned several decorations and ended his career as a colonel.

After the War, Wes used a personal contact to get himself enrolled as a candidate for a ship’s master’s license, as he wanted to get away from planetary life and see if he could find solace in the Black.  Upon graduation, his uncanny skills in precise astrogation earned him a berth as a junior bridge officer for the Corone Mining Consortium.  It was here that Wes added Zero-G survival skills to his impressive list of accomplishments, and he gradually rose up through the ranks to 1st officer on a bulk ore carrier.  However, this life was not for Wes, and he decided to use his prior skills and knowledge from the military as the basis for a change in employers to Maczarek Security, again as a junior bridge officer, with the 8th Naval Company.  His knowledge of combat operations, combined with his most recent training and exemplary experience in ship operations resulted in promotions and the offer of a captaincy when a berth opened on one of the company’s company drop ships.

Re: Sign-Up and Profile Thread

It's good to see you back on Phoenix Mike and I'm excited to be RPing with you again. I love the bio and it should add some intrigue between our characters as Bryan served in the Alliance during the war so I could see some tension potentially rising between the two. Also, as Bryan is very ambitious he will likley hold a bit of a grudge against Wes for being named CO instead of him as he seemed to be the leading candidate for XO before the crew overhaul, at least in his mind.
