Topic: Ship design resources

Does anyone know any good sites?

Here's one.

Also, what do people use for their 3D renderings?

Re: Ship design resources

I use AutoCAD for rendering, but that can be a mite on the "It costs HOW MUCH?!?!" side.

Re: Ship design resources

Well between Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Flash I've had a great time creating raw artwork from scratch - though admittedly I'm not much of an artist, but I would strongly recommend the following games: Sins of a Solar Empire provides excellent screen shots for planets, star systems, etc., and Galactic Civilizations II has a tool for designing ships from pregenerated parts and such which I once used to design a ship for a tabletop Firefly campaign I was running (sadly I forgot to save the file when I was done so it never made it to the meetup). Galactic Civilizations has tons of parts to use with many different ways to connect them - you'll find it's a lot of work but for the non-artistic (like me) it's significantly less work than starting from scratch.

*confesses to using Google searches and Microsoft Paint...*

*confesses to the same until I have the kind of time on my hands to utilize the programs I mentioned above*

Re: Ship design resources

Google is your friend. MS Paint is so uberlite that you can't actually complain about it big_smile

Re: Ship design resources

Haven't done any 3-D renderings myself (although I have software to do it, just haven't had the time to use it).

Most of my artistic work is done in Photoshop, with and without an electronic drawing tablet.

Re: Ship design resources

Careful with ships and paintwork.  Our Naboo imperial shuttle on West Star just accidentally got repainted with BABOON in large red letters down the side!

Rebels and Seppies... This one was a clanker as well, no less. Fiendish things. I'd space it, but they can survive in vacuum, damn them.

Re: Ship design resources

I have created the mule Sophie for the Atlantis in 3D. I used Google SketchUp for that. It took me a while and I had to use a lot of 'messy' solutions, but in the end it got me where I wanted. The program itself is really easy to use, especially if you have no drawing skills at all like I do. It's pretty self-explanatory and there are some tutorials. What I also like about it is that many users upload their creations for others to use. For example: if you want to create a car but can't get the wheels right (or don't feel like making those) you can download wheels that other users have created and integrate those into your own design.

Re: Ship design resources

Photoshop or similar programs are certainly the workhorse here, but I like using actual satellite photos off Google Earth. Many of the islands off California make very nice limited play maps. Flip them around and rotate em and no one knows instantly where they are. Plus the 3D terrain can give you neat angles to clip the map.

That's a cool idea!

Re: Ship design resources

I've been thinking about Carolyn's previous ship, the Fawkes, recently, and been considering what it looks like. Unfortunately the original fireflyrpg.com website doesn't exist anymore, so the ship resources there are gone.

I did a bit of poking around online, and found a few I thought I'd like.. the problem with most original spaceship designs is that they are either fighter sized (XWing/Tie Fighter) or capital ship sized (Enterprise, BG, etc). Not a whole lot of love for the Serenity/Falcon sized freighters.

If anyone has any other space design resources, I'd be happy to hear them.

Anyway, this seems like a fairly close idea to what I had in mind for the Fawkes:

Impressive design!

Re: Ship design resources

Wow, nice! Sets me in mind of the Normandy, albeit a little smaller?

Re: Ship design resources

Thanks. If I had time I may design my own. And if there weren't already a bunch of Firefly sims consider giving up the Umbra when/if Carolyn ever rediscovers the Fawkes and make it its own sim. Ah, dreams.

Thanks for the link, Mike, I'll check it out.

There's actually another three volumes of those out there, but I don't know where you can find them all on one site. Search for "Cortext Shipyards" and you'll find them.

Here is volume 2, but I couldn't find any others.
