Back from a train trip to Scotland. A full write-up on that will appear on my blog.

Re: LOA

Welcome back Silent.  One of the items on my bucket list is to take the Flying Scotsman train to Scotland from England.  If they still operate it, that is.  Looked like an elegant way to travel in high style.

Depends on whether you're talking about the train service or the locomotive. The answer is 'Yes, but' to both. For more information on that, please email me.

Re: LOA

Having a bunch of issues with the connectivity of my Internet. Gonna go on a tentative LOA until it gets fixed

At the very least I won't be posting so fast

On holiday until August 16, with very limited Internet connection. I'll try to read the forums through cellphone tethering, but no guarantee. See you soon!

Just a reminder that I'll be on holiday from Sunday to Friday, but I may well get a few posts in if I have time.

Re: LOA

I'll bet Berlin is totally different than the last time I was there, Silent.  I went there with Flag Orders while on active duty in the Army in March 1974.  We drove my friend's '65 Mustang through East Germany to West Berlin, then paid a visit to East Berlin for the experience.  The exchange rate at the time was about 2 Marks to the Dollar in the west, but in East German Marks the exchange rate was about 12 to one, so it seemed we were as rich as Midas for the day.  Still a lot of bombed out buildings and what looked like the original street cars were running.  The Brandenburg Gate was still with the statue facing the wrong direction, but West Berlin was a thriving city.  We spent most of our day in the East driving around, and ate at the Hotel Stadt Berlin, a big Soviet centerpiece.  The Wall was a stark reminder of the Cold War at the time...

Re: LOA

I've been tied up in a conference all week. Posting has really gotten away from me. It should calm down after the weekend, but I make no promises about posting until then.

My research suggests that the quadriga on top of the gate has always faced East - what the GDR did do was remove the Prussian eagle and Iron Cross from it; they have since been restored. That hotel is still there in fact but now called the Park Inn Berlin - and has a casino now as well!

Well, I hope it isn't Fillory... have a great time!

Re: LOA

Ah, so that was it.  Berlin was a fun town.  Almost got stationed there with the Berlin Brigade.  We ate onme meal in a restaurant that served one dish... chicken.  The room was like eating in a gym... large room, high ceiling and four bare walls.  The people were very friendly though.
