Topic: Chat?

Is a chat program/application/page coming to Phoenix?
If not, would anybody else think it to be a good idea?
Just my thoughts...

I think it would be a good idea.

Re: Chat?

I agree, and I'd like to keep pushing the idea of our expanding to include play-by-chat, play-by-email, etc., and I'll mention Robert's suggestion in Sim Proposals that we do play-by-Skype (http://www.phoenix-rp.com/viewtopic.php?id=679)!

Meanwhile, having a dedicated chat facility we can all use would conceivably be community-building, which is always good.

Any other thoughts? Euan?

Re: Chat?

Not too long ago I read about people who played tabletop RPG's online, using the chat site IMVU. I haven't really looked into it myself, but apparently you can create an avatar there, have it sit at a table and play a tabletop RPG. As I said, I haven't looked into it yet, but it sounds interesting. Especially for people like us, who are from all over the place.

Re: Chat?

Interesting idea indeed, but I think IMVU has quite a lot of advertising and so on, so I'd be reluctant to join. Skype's quite a simple service, though, so that'd have my vote.

Re: Chat?

Well the easiest way for that to happen is exactly what Ash said if we have everyone on Skype we create a giant channel of everyone that way when one of the members are on Skype they can talk to each other via chat or call.  (I have used it for other games, it works great.)

Come on! Vampires! Grrr! Nasty! Let's annihilate them, for justice, and for... the safety of puppies... and Christmas, right? -Spike (from Doomed)

Re: Chat?

We could also try IRC, which has the advantage of not needing a mic or such. Persistant chat channels.

Re: Chat?

OMG, IRC brings me back to the days of the floppy and when no one ever thought they'd fill a 1Gig hard drive. Are people still using that? tongue

Re: Chat?

Me too for all of those, also NwN and ... uh, some cRPG that I can't think of the name at the moment.

And probably some other formats that I can't recall

Re: Chat?

Heh heh, classic.

So how's this: what's stopping us from having an IRC (or similar) and a Skype channel, both with links from our site here?

We could then quite easily use both for extra RP options to add more feathers to Phoenix's cap. :-D

Re: Chat?

I'd exercise caution, you start putting in real chat options as an every day thing and you wind up losing some forum traffic. I've seen it happen before.

Re: Chat?

True enough, so perhaps the chat shouldn't be used to supplement or an alternative for RPing but rather just a means for people to communicate sans player characters.

Re: Chat?

Well, Robert and myself used Skype and it got us into a free MMO, that haven't played in awhile sad. It was nice to have a chat interface though. I've done a few RPGs via Skype before, and you can either have the honesty policy with dice rolling or use Invisible Castle. Either way, I remember the chat section of AJJE, and I think I talked to Ash once on there XD

Re: Chat?

On many forums they have a program like chatango.com or similar. What you think?

Re: Chat?

Yeah I was thinking using an online dice roller for my Skype games, although another easy possibility is for me to set up a camera so that everyone can see and roll the dice here myself - I think some people can't have fun without rolling dice though so it does draw that question into play for the group.

Re: Chat?

Yeah, I think rolling dice can be quite an essential part of role-play. I'd probably encourage an honesty policy - some people cheat even at tabletop RPG dice rolls, so it's not like an experienced GM won't see round it when a player consistently rolls straight 6s, 20s, 100s, or whatever.

And as for a chat option reducing forum traffic, I hadn't really expected that. AJJE's chat was seriously under-used, and ours might well be too. I think I like people having options, though. I like the idea of our 'hosting' play-by-email games where the game's stats, info, bios, or whatever are posted on a forum here as a resource but the whole action takes place off-site by email. Perhaps a post-game synopsis would be posted for posterity and for the sakes of anyone interested in the game but who couldn't, for whatever reason, join.

So I think while I see our core remaining third-person text-based play-by-post role-playing, I am looking forward to our expanding to include other things like play-by-Skype, play-by-email, and so on, as well. I think it can work in a community with the cohesion we have. It's like, a group of friends might regularly hang out at one particular pub or bar, but sometimes they also meet up in a coffee shop or at a local attraction like a beach. Taking some of the action away from the pub or bar and moving it from time to time to the coffee shop or beach doesn't detract from the friends' enjoyment and experience as a community, it enhances it.

Re: Chat?

Ash, what is an integral part of what I believe Jason was saying was the bit about trying to implement it as an "every day thing" as he put it, or to elaborate - to push for it as an added key place to roleplay. If we try to push for it to be a major part of our community, he's suggesting that it will detract from the forums and I agree on that point. However, if there's no serious push for its use, as you point out Ash, it will remain under-used.

I think what we could risk doing is turning some roleplay events into real-time events that won't be shared as a community, or worse yet, won't be valued by the rest of the community. Here's an example:

On the Elemental, if Nick and I took our entire scene between Menard and Eli out of the forums, here's what could/would happen:

  1. Our event isn't logged and is never posted (unlikely)

  2. Our event is logged and is dumped all at once into the forums

  3. The event causes a discrepancy in time flow

These problems can be severe detriments to the forums as they can prevent the rest of the community from knowing what's going on (case 1), the community will need to spend a LOT of time catching up (case 2), or the community spends a lot of time trying to determine time flow and integrate the event into the game or adjust the event if it doesn't fit (case 3). All of these are undesirable - so I think the idea is that we'd like to keep roleplaying in the forums, and everything else can (but doesn't have to) go to these other possible places.

Re: Chat?

A chat for casual discussion, I mean, NOT yet for rp... at least chat for rp was not my intention in this thread.

I agree with Krista.

Re: Chat?

Chat for community-building first and foremost, then, I'm with you there.

I think chat could serve as an additional RP facility, though; the issues in Robert's example are resolved if any RP on the chat facility was stand-alone, i.e. not part of forum sims. So no to RPing by chat a scene as Menard and Eli on from the Ele, but yes to RPing a session of some sim which isn't a sim listed on the index.

Or perhaps a special one-off sim linking multiple sims.
