Topic: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

The Odyssey, a sim in the Firefly universe, is looking for additional characters to join its ragtag crew. The sim is basically about a colorful crew on a fast and small ship, trying to make ends meet and being not exactly discriminative in the type of work they have to do to earn some cash. A more elaborate description of ship and crew can of course be found on the Odyssey page.

We already have an engineering crew and a piloting crew, as well as a doctor, an XO and a CO. And of course a mysterious passenger who seems to know a lot more about many things then she is letting on. So what are we looking for? Anything goes, actually. Whether you want to play a fugitive on the run, a smuggler, a gun-for-hire, a Companion, a ship's cook, a passenger, a businessman/-woman or a psychopatic killer: your addition to the crew will no doubt make things very interesting!

So if you are interested in joining, please let me know, either through mail, PM, or by replying to this post.

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

I might be interested in this. Need to come up with a character concept first, which may take a little while.

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

Hm, or maybe I can bring back an old character. Lenny Li (Li Chen) as the Shipboard Systems Analyst - a computer scientist and electrical engineer with a focus on improving efficiencies in computational and electrical systems, or James Colfax - Structural Engineer, specializes in hull maintenance, repair, and high-grade armor upgrades.

Guess you can have your pick if you'd prefer one over the other, these characters have been sitting on the backburner for a while now, but they're already written up and ready to go!  big_smile

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

We already have a chief engineer and a gunner/engineer who are largely occupied with keeping the ship running. But we do not have a computer scientist/tech specialist. And we also don't have someone specializing in hull and armor. Would James Colfax have knowledge about (ship) weapons? Because we also don't have a weapon specialist.

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

Hm, I wouldn't say he's a weapons specialist or even knowledgeable in the subject, fitting armor where weapons are on the ship would be about as close as it comes. Here's the old bio I had for The Shadow if you want to read more.

Personal Information:
Name: James Colfax
Born: October 18th, 2485
Place of birth: Ares
Age: 34
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 190
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Bald (Shaven)
Rank: Crew / Independent Contractor
Status: Single
Known Relatives:
Dad: Henry Colfax, 60 years old - Ares
Mom: Suzy Colfax, 58 years old - Ares
Religion: agnostic
Quote: “I don’t much care what you do with your ship, so long as you pay what we agree, you feed me and give me a bed to sleep in, and you let me do my work.”

Background

James grew up on Ares, one of the moons orbiting around Boros. He spent every night watching for Alliance Cruisers being constructed in orbit and yearned his entire young life for a chance to learn how to work on ships.
A welder took James as an apprentice welder where James learned the art of welding only too well. Being new to welding, many of his projects tended to fall apart easily. Rather than lose hope, James wanted to know why his welding jobs didn’t hold up yet the welder’s projects always held together. James became fascinated with stresses on and within metals, and how welding certain metals, or using certain types of metal in the seal can make a welding job stronger.
He eventually had completed his apprenticeship and had decided to get a job with an Alliance Shipyard on Ares. Instead, the Alliance sent him to an Engineering Academy where James excelled in his studies and eventually graduated with a Ph.D in Structural Engineering at the young age of 20. He was offered a job as a professor at the Academy, but he refused saying “I’d rather be in the field.”

James returned to Ares and got a job with one of the Alliance Shipyards. The only thing that barred James’ dreams was that his talent went unappreciated. James loved welding and insisted that he wanted to be a part of the assembly crew, but unless he was a part of a team that designed the ship, he wasn’t permitted to put his knowledge to use. This became an issue for James and he eventually left after his buddy Mickey “Wings” Crawford at the shipyard told him he should do independent contracting.

Allies:

Mickey “Wings” Crawford – nicknamed Wings because of a hilarious party in which he fell down a flight of stairs because he was trying to fly. “Wings” is a welder from James’ old place of work at an Alliance Shipyard.

Enemies:

Officer Samuel Partridge, Alliance Engineering Corps – a rival of James’ during his undergraduate career at the Academy. James always came out on top in all of his courses and Samuel couldn’t stand it. When James got a job at the Alliance Shipyard, Samuel had gotten an administrative job and made it hard for James’ opinion on ship assembly to be heard.

Business History

James is a rare specimen, Structural Engineers are difficult to find outside of the Core Planets as they typically graduate from the Academy with a job from the Alliance. James’ standard rate is three times the average daily wage of a ship’s mechanic or roughly double the daily wage of an expert ship’s mechanic with 10 years experience. People pay hand over fist for his services as he offers his services at half what the Alliance would charge for their structural engineers. James has the market cornered outside the Core Planets. He spends his time going from job to job with little to no time in between jobs. He typically works a ship until he’s done and then gets off at the next stop with another job lined up and waiting for him. Structural Engineers are known to be paid well but better yet is the savings of the savvy captain who hires a Structural Engineer. The savings made in the engineer’s preventative maintenance is ten times what James’ average contract runs for. James has worked on 9 ships since he opened his business 12 years ago, more ships per unit time than any two structural engineers combined from his graduating class.

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

Characterwise he'd certainly fit in with the crew and there is normally plenty of work to do on the hull (or with other repairs on the ship for that matter). The one thing I am a bit worried about is his fee: cash is the one thing that isn't overly abundant and James does seem rather expensive. But if we can find a solution to that, he'd certainly could become a valued member of the crew.

But that also goes for Li Chen: a tech specialist would have enough work to do, I'd say.

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

Both characters were designed so that they would already have tons of work to do. With the exception of high-end Alliance ships, the efficiencies in the computational and electrical systems are poor, and with the exception of high-end Alliance ships, the quality of the hull can always be improved upon. What I wanted to explore with these characters was the distant relationship they would have with the crew due to the volumes of work that nobody fully understands. The actual nature of their work usually keeps them occupied in areas of the ship that don't normally get the attention both Lenny Li and James Colfax would give them.

James would spend most of his time in a space suit on the hull, peening the hull into further durability or swapping sheets of metal, or reforming sheets of metal, etc.; Lenny would spend most of his time in crawlspaces sorting through wires or through computer code, and rewiring or reprogramming. Lenny has motives beyond money, making it possible to recruit him at a price more affordable on the ships finances.

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

In that case I'd say Lenny would be an easier hire for the Odyssey, simply because he's more affordable. But the choice is up to you!

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

I think I'm going to give this a little time though - just in case I get a new character concept that's a better fit for the Odyssey.

No problem, Robert. They probably won't be making landfall again for a little bit anyway.

Unless they get shot out of the sky... Muhahaha!

You know, it's very disturbing when your GM starts talking this way. That and the fact that due to circumstances the Odyssey is now trying to escape an Alliance cruiser at the exact moment that one of the engines broke down. There's bad luck and there's unknown forces out to get you. I think this falls in the latter category.

Oh man, that'd be awesome, I love sim crossovers. Mischa, your crew's lapdancing, drinking, and similar needs can all be met at Phantasm, best nightclub on the skyplex. ;-)

Re: Odyssey looking for fresh blood

The Marshal is just about to be in need of a 3rd party group of investigators as well (maybe, depending on how negotiations go). smile

Edit: Even more awesome is that August might just bump into Jane again there! Get the fireworks ready! big_smile
