Topic: Maczarek Security Corporate Headquarters, Persephone

In the land of the hot, the person who owns the swimming pool is king. This was the principle behind Waterworld, one of the few aquatic resorts in the ‘Verse.

With its dozen pools, ranging from large open play pools with water-slides not for the faint-hearted and private ones for structured exercise, Waterworld was intended for everyone from young glamorous farmhands to old men who should really cut down on the pork-life.

Once they had spent the day in water, they could spend money like water in the casino. There were the many, naturally rigged, machines with hundred thousand dollar jackpots or the more traditional games such as roulette, blackjack or strip-poker-by-proxy. To keep the punters from wandering off, free drinks were provided by a number of swimsuit-clad girls known as the Mermaids, although they suspiciously lacked tails.

The house always won of course and this made some punters, fuelled by losses of capital and sobriety, prone to unruly behaviour. Along with the card-counters, Waterworld needed security.

That came in the form of what were termed Poseidon’s Royal Guard; a group of about one hundred men and women who wore long cloaks and carried tridents with the capacity to stun those who needed ejecting. Pistols were concealed under their cloaks for the situations where lethal force was required.

“Poseidon’s Royal Guard” were also known as 1st Company, Eagles of Warsaw Battalion, Maczarek Security and this is the focus of our story.

****

Once upon a time there was a young woman named Anna. The U-War started and little Anna found herself in the Alliance military as a tank gunner. Her job was to fire at dirty Browncoat vehicles and make them blow up.

Anna was very good at her job. So good they gave her medals for it. Eventually, they took her and her friends out of their tank, so they could send them around the friendly systems. For Anna was a pretty young woman and a pretty face helped to sell war bonds.

Following the victory, Anna found herself given a free suit and demobilised. With a shrinking military, there were lots of people who had only known war as employment who needed jobs. Some people felt that they could use these people to provide security or take it away and so the mercenary business was born. Or rather revived.

Some of these mercenaries were lone guns, going wherever the violence took them. Some formed organised gangs.
Others decided that this was going to be big business and they should get in at the bottom of the market.

Six months after the war ended, Anna met an old friend of hers named Sarah. Sarah felt that they should go into business together. She would provide the money and Anna would provide the expertise.

Maczarek Security was born and they all lived somewhat happily ever after.

****

At the moment, Anna wasn’t very happy. In fact, she was quietly fuming. The cause of her annoyance was parked on the corporate landing pad on the roof.

Anna Maczarek, or “Colonel” Maczarek, as she styled herself in-house, was a tall slim woman in her early 30s with somewhat Slavic features, brown eyes and long black hair she generally kept in a bun. It was currently down and somewhat damp - she’d just come back from a swim in the pool. She’d dried and put on her brown day uniform with the red shoulder boards, but had decided to let her hair dry naturally. First, though, she had to deal with this.

The corporate headquarters of Maczarek Security were on the tenth floor of the second tower of Waterworld, which allowed the company to use the offices rent-free as part of the payment for providing security. The operational headquarters were in the Border Planets, but a few relevant assets were kept here.

She could scoot in the back entrance, but decided to go in the front way to have a look at part of her “empire”.

Stepping through the revolving doors, she sniffed the air-conditioned air and wondered what the electricity bill in this place was for the tenth time that month. She knew her electricity bill; Finance were good at keeping track of that.

She started to walk through the casino, watching the holiday makers and convention-goers as they won and lost – mostly lost – considerable sums of money. A large poster advertised the show that was one of the primary attractions of the evening at the casino – Pieces of Eight. It involved pirates and swashbuckling, as well as women not wearing very much.

Within five seconds, she was joined by one of her personal aides, who started to update her on some of the latest news regarding her company.

She waved him off.

“I’ll deal with that later”. She continued to cross the floor and after two minutes reached the elevator, hitting the button for the tenth floor.

The situation was extremely embarrassing. It had just been a simple job. Clear out some squatters, remove their stuff. Then the pilot had to crash the remotely-piloted shuttle into the Skyplex…

The company lawyers would have to sort out the compensation; she could arrange the punishment with the HR people.

She exited the lift at the tenth floor and entered the reception area, where one Daniel Cowley was waiting. The old intelligence head was holding a folder and smiling.

“Cowley”, she said, “Glad you could make it. You got the stuff?”

“Yes, ma’am”, he replied, “It should be a suitable punishment”.

Maczarek was walking faster now. She would soon enter the conference room. She straightened up and pushed the double doors open.

She looked around the room. The crew of Kvant stood around the table. Only the captain and pilot were absent. They had been suspended on pay and would soon lose their jobs.

“Right you bunch of hopeless useless oxen”, she said, “Explain to me why I shouldn’t have you thrown out of here in disgrace”.

Being second in command had its perks...and its problems. If nobody else would speak he would have to, and if somebody else spoke before him it could end up not looking good on him.

"Nobody could predict what was going to happen," he said with some confidence but mostly sincerity and honesty, although not turning to look at the boss until now. "I'm sure Mr. Lakehurst struck everyone as a little weird, but nobody had any idea he could mess things up like this," he shook his head once as he spoke.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/rlongtin/Phoenix%20Roleplaying/Quinn/Quinn6Mini.jpg

Quinn shifted gears, the pitch in his voice dropping slightly, going from reflecting mostly sincerity to reflecting mostly professionalism. "I've had talks with Danielle about our performance as a unit, as well as conversations with the rest of the unit and from my own personal knowledge and what others have said it was all pretty much the same: he did mediocre work and was a strange guy."

His voice then shifted more towards sincerity once more. "One time I asked Danielle to get us another pilot; send in for a transfer, ask him to take a holiday, something..." Quinn shook his head and pressed his thumb and index fingers to the bridge of his nose. "She said 'it's tough being a pilot, especially when you're not one of the guys' and that I should 'try to cut him a little slack because it's not his fault he's an outsider'."

Quinn looked up again, at the boss. "After that I never questioned it again...until now anyways."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/rlongtin/Phoenix%20Roleplaying/Quinn/Quinn4Mini.png

He paused, his eyes drifted a bit in thought. A moment later he had his words, and nodded slightly staring at the table in front of him. "I should have followed my instincts."

"We have another pilot you know Quinn."  Angel spoke up finally.  Angel stood in the back as was his custom, he never talked a lot but was one of the best fighters when it came to gang ups.  Angel was on the front lines of the op taking down 5 men by himself at the same time.  Which is why he was not the pilot of the group his fighting skills were too good for him to be in the back.

"If you gonna fire us then do it mam, I always have other offers."  Angel said knowing that he could just go back to his underground fighting job he had before hooking up with the Eagles.

Re: Maczarek Security Corporate Headquarters, Persephone

Maczarek glared at him briefly.

"Quinn, excellent, some contrition. You actually raised the point. When it wasn't actioned, you let it drop, which looks bad. It's not as bad as Danielle, who really should have taken action".

She then turned to Angel and then banged her fist on the table. Her voice had so much venom in it she was actually spitting.

"You, mate, will speak when I give you permission! There are hundreds of people queueing up to join this organisation and you are not irreplacable. I'm bringing 200 Eagles in this year - do not make it 201!

Do you know how much Lakehurst's drinking problem is going to cost this company in a legal settlement? I do. It's worth another 100 of you at least! That's before the bad publicity this gets!

We've already lost one big contract to Wallenstein as a direct result! It! IS! JUST! NOT! GOOD! ENOUGH!"

"You said to explain why, we shouldn't be fired I assumed that meant all of us.  In reality you shouldn't we failed to keep our commanding officer and pilot in check, we work for you so even-though we were following our orders by your appointed Captain we failed and should be punished."  Angel responded trying to take the high road.  The job was fun Angel liked it but if he was gonna be fired today it wanted it to be done with then drawn out.....HE hates lectures.

To keep Angel from adding to the list of reasons they should be fired, Quinn stepped in again. "All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from them," he said confidently, recalling that quote from someplace. "Regardless of how much blame each of us may accept, we all learned from either our own mistakes or the mistakes of others. We all were blown away by what happened. Unlike a bunch of new recruits that might hear about it in class, it affected us personally and no replacements can take the lesson learned from this incident more seriously than we do now."

Quinn paused momentarily before continuing. "When broken bones heal, they're stronger than before. Chinese monks back on Earth-That-Was used to punch rocks to make their bones stronger. None of us joined the toughest Corporate Mercenary group because we think we're the best, we did it because we know we can be the best." Subconsciously Quinn imagined the look in Angel's face changing after that comment, but he dismissed the thought. Quinn looked around the room and spoke to the rest of his team with a bit of force in his voice, looking from face to face. "You don't get to be the best without breaking a few bones."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/rlongtin/Phoenix%20Roleplaying/Quinn/Quinn4Mini.png

He returned his attention to Ms. Maczarek, his voice shifting to one of sincerity. "If I wanted to hire somebody for a job, I'd pick someone who has made mistakes and has learned from them. Better than someone who can't learn from mistakes or hasn't made any yet." At this point Quinn's voice was still soft and sincere. "If you want a soldier, you pick someone who has been shot and is still willing to fight;" Quinn said, his voice gathering confidence, "if you're scouting for a sports team, you pick someone who has lost a game and came to the next one stronger; if you want a Shepherd, you pick someone who failed to convert people in a homeless shelter but showed up again the next day because they believe in their religion; but you don't pick someone who hasn't made mistakes or can't learn from them, because they're the real liability."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/rlongtin/Phoenix%20Roleplaying/Quinn/Quinn6Mini.jpg

He returned to sincerity again. "All I'm saying is we've all learned from what happened and we're ready to come back better than before, and money can't buy that kind of experience."

With that, Quinn sat back in his chair. He said his peace and he hope that would be enough.

Re: Maczarek Security Corporate Headquarters, Persephone

"Thank you", Maczarek replied, "You're doing the best..."

The door to the conference room suddenly opened and a tall man in 50s in the uniform of a Maczarek Security captain entered, looking rather out of breath.

"What is it? Can't you see I'm busy!", she yelled.

"Ma'am, we have a situation downstairs", the man said.

"Well deal with it", she replied, "That's what I pay you for, Arkwright".

Arkwright looked uncomfortable, composed himself for two or three seconds, then continued. He had interrupted for a reason and an important one.

"We are. So is the coroner".

"WHAT?!" Maczarek asked, "What do you mean the coroner is dealing with it?"

"You'd better come with me, ma'am".

Maczarek and Arkwright rapidly left the room. Cowley sat there and looked up at the ceiling. This was going to be fun. He reached to open his folder.

"Ah...", he said, "I guess someone's died during an operation...

Well, the good news is that you're not going to be fired. However, we're going to be docking you all a week's pay and give you one last chance to redeem yourself. It should be an interesting and challenging assignment. It will force you to think outside the box".

He smiled.

"Ever heard of Girls with Exploding Guitars?"

Quinn looked over at Cowley. He despised Cowley's arrogance and the way he played lap-dog to Maczarek to give the impression of having power. Despite his feelings, he restrained himself and very plainly responded, "no, can't say I have."

"You mean the Thrash band I love them saw them in concert a while back, they soothe me."  Angel said nodding to the man.  In Angel's old job they always seemed to play hard rock and thrash metal while the fight was going on.  The music allowed Angel to settle in and get into the right mindset for hurting people.

He looked over at Angel briefly before looking back to Cowley. Honestly Quinn didn't feel any of their answers mattered much whether they had heard of them or not, he expected an explanation from Cowley anyways. Quinn felt Cowley liked the sound of his own voice, so he'd rather not have to spend very much time exchanging pleasantries with him.

Re: Maczarek Security Corporate Headquarters, Persephone

Cowley smiled; he was glad that someone knew the name.

"Girls with Exploding Guitars are a four-member girl band from Whitefall. Their members are Lisa Lewis, a redhead with rather nice legs; Hyun Kim, a raven-haired beauty; Mimi Larson, a blonde who needs to eat more and Suzie Ahmed, who needs a haircut".

At this point, a female member of Kvant's crew, a blonde mechanic by the name of Sarah Chu, placed her hand over her face. Cowley's interest in this group was bordering on the unhealthy.

"They are about to launch a 20-gig tour in the Rim Worlds, to promote sales of their new album, It Tastes Like Chicken and also get some more money for their record company.

Your job is a standard 3-Papa; look after them during their tour and make sure they stay safe. Please be advised that they can get a little wild at times. The last hotel room testifies to that".

Cowley held up a photograph of a thoroughly trashed hotel room; the viewscreen was lodged inside the bed.

Cowley looked at Quinn.

"You're leaving in 24 hours time and heading for Whitefall to collect the band from their ranch. Since we don't like to run our ships crew only if we can help it, you're ferrying over the lovely Amelia Duquesne to meet with her platoon".

Amy Duquesne was one of the organisation's in-house heroes. The larger-than-life eye-patch wearing Lieutenant was one of the Eagles' best operatives and had personally led the Hamburg Heroin House raid on Constance three weeks ago - she had  been recovering from an injury sustained during it.

Re: Maczarek Security Corporate Headquarters, Persephone

"Perfect," Quinn said sitting back half-annoyed. In the past, a stalker meant danger on a number of levels, and often times more danger than a drunk or an upset customer. Stalkers were like terrorists - just as committed and just as crazy. "Do they think they know who the stalker is or would that be chasing shadows until the stalker reveals himself?"

"They don't know who the stalker is - in fact their manager isn't entirely sure that he/she really exists and thinks it just makes their Birdsong feed more interesting...

However, the customer's wishes are to be followed and we need to make sure that nobody touches them who they don't want touching them".

Cowley turned to Angel and smiled a little ironic smile.

"Mr. Barnaby", he said, "I often find that those two are rather more similar than people think. We are still mercenaries, just of a different sort. I know a couple of governors that my old firm provided security for that had plenty of groupies...

Now, if there aren't any further questions..."

---- TIMELINE CUT ----

Re: Maczarek Security Corporate Headquarters, Persephone

As the doors opened to reception, it was clear that Anna Maczarek was in a good mood. She was humming and said hello to the receptionist, who quickly guessed that she'd had a particularly good date night with her husband - so good, she'd come in later than usual.

She glanced around and saw one of her visitors for today - Captain Zigler. Her mood dropped slightly as she wasn't too keen on issuing this assignment, but needs must.

"Ah, Captain", she said with a grin on her face, "How often do you have breakfast in bed?"

Levy met her grin with a decidedly unenthusiastic glower.

"Is this the kind of conversation that ends with me having breakfast in bed, breakfast, and in fact a bed, way less often than I do now?"
